Untwisting the Tongues Issue, Part 5a

October 26, 2012
Generally speaking, we can predict what will happen in our Universe. In fact, creation is so consistent that we’ve even drawn principles that we call, “The laws of nature.” But every now and then, God steps in and breaks the very laws He created in order to communicate His glory. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez takes a break from our study in 1 Corinthians to provide some biblical background on miracles. Our message is titled, "A Brief Study of When God Breaks the Rules He Made."

Most of us can give a detailed run down of what to expect at our church on a Sunday morning. We sing a hymn, someone prays, then the pastor presents a message, and then we take the offering and sing two more songs before we’re dismissed. While every congregation will look a little bit different, most churches have an orderly fashion in which things are done. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez talks about the scriptural foundations for order in the church. We're in 1 Corinthians 14.

Imagine what it would be like if large portions of your Bible were missing. What if you tried to turn to the book of Romans…only to find it wasn’t there? The Christians in the early church faced a similar problem. At that point in history the gospels and the epistles were only just being written. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez points out some of the provisions God made for those early days. We’re taking "A Closer Look at New Testament Churches without New Testaments."

Travel to France, and you’ll find people speaking French. In the Middle East, you will likely hear Arabic spoken. And here in America, most people speak in English. But what about heaven? What kind of language do they speak in the heavenly realms? Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez "Examines the Role of Tongues in the Bible." We’re trying to understand the biblical teaching on this spiritual gift and how it relates to us today.

In the Bible, significant events are often accompanied by amazing miracles. Ten plagues brought about Israel’s freedom from slavery. Healings and supernatural occurrences characterized the ministry of Jesus. And a remarkable sign signified the beginning of the church. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez takes us back to the early days of the church, to put a supernatural event in its proper context. It’s part of a study in 1 Corinthians 14.

If you’ve ever traveled to another country, or been around people who speak a different language, you know how difficult it is to communicate a point. Unless there’s someone around to interpret, it’s hard to make sense of a foreign tongue. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez talks about a similar issue in Scripture, and takes a careful look at the spiritual gift of tongues.

When we open God’s Word, we occasionally come across a puzzling passage or verse that leave us scratching our heads. When this happens, it’s time to dig a little deeper, and take a closer look at what God is telling us. Today on Focal Point, we’ll turn to 1 Corinthians 14, where we learn about a spiritual gift that is frequently misunderstood. It’s a message titled, "The Problem with Corinthians and Californian Styled Tongues."

There are thousands of languages around the world, and though we couldn’t possibly understand every dialect, each known language can be used to reach people in various countries with the Word of God. But what about a Christian who speaks in a language that no one can understand? Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez examines the phenomenon of speaking in tongues and unravels a little bit of the mystery.

When hiking through the wildness, it’s critical to stick to the trail and read the clearly marked signs. Those guideposts are there to ensure we stay safe! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez reminds us that it’s just as important we follow the God-given map for our spiritual lives, as well. When we follow the instructions in God’s Word, we’ll never get lost. But if we decide to take our own detours, that’s when we lose our way.

There’s a multitude of voices in our world today, each clamoring for our attention, and each claiming to have the inside-track on life’s mysteries. Before we accept advice from outside sources, we need to remember that God has already given us a manual for life’s questions! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns our attention to the authoritative, unchanging Word of God. When you have a question, do you go to the Bible for answers? Today’s message is called, "Reaffirming God’s Word as Our Ultimate Authority."
