Turning to the Law Offices of Melchizedek, Part 1

November 12, 2014
If you’re in legal trouble, you’ll likely hire a lawyer to represent you in court. But even the best lawyer is limited in what he or she can do.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez describes our need for spiritual representation before God. To do so, we turn to Hebrews, chapter 5, and enter the law offices of Melchizedek. And the job of human representatives like Melchizedek is to refer us to the perfect Advocate … Jesus Christ.

Let’s face it, we’re all guilty of breaking God’s perfect law. There’s not one person who could plead innocence in God’s court. So obvious is our guilty verdict, we’d be hard-pressed to find a lawyer willing to help us. Thankfully, God has already provided us with spiritual representation. On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike is in Hebrews chapter 5. We’ll see how everything about the Old Testament priests symbolized the salvation Jesus would ultimately give us.

We’ve reached chapter 5 in our verse-by-verse study of the book of Hebrews. This section of Scripture is all about the role of Old Testament priests. Consider them like the lawyers of Israel … representing the people in God’s courtroom. But you may wonder how the ancient priesthood applies to us today. Well, that’s what this study is all about.

Instead of the throne room of heaven, Jesus lived in a humble home.  Instead of a multitude of angels singing His praise, Jesus was surrounded by flawed and broken people.  Instead of being wrapped in glory and majesty, Jesus hung naked on a cross.  All to seek and save sinners like you and me.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez pauses our mini-series in Hebrews to point out the amazing significance of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

When you think of the greatest people who have ever lived, who comes to mind?  Do you think back to people like Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa, or Martin Luther King, Jr.?  While we’ve witnessed some remarkable men and women throughout history, none can compare to Jesus.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez looks back at where we’ve been this far in our study of Hebrews.

You might remember the song that went, “Help, I need somebody/ Help, not just anybody.”  Now, the Beatles might not have been a Christian band, but those lyrics definitely sound like a biblical call for help!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez points us to the Somebody who can help us get through the trials and troubles of life.

Life can be so unsure.  One minute we’re on firm footing … then suddenly, the bottom drops out from under us.  The next thing we know, we’re in a proverbial hole, looking up.  Of course, we could try to dig our way out.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains there’s a much better option.  When life caves in around us, there’s Someone who has the power to pull us out.

We don’t need any more reminders that life can be difficult.  Every day we face opposition, either from the Enemy, each other, even ourselves!  And fighting the good fight can leave us fatigued.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez opens up the book of Hebrews to uncover the hope and help we have readily available anytime we need it.
