The Role of the Holy Spirit, Part 1

February 21, 2014
Our world is full of lost people.  It’s a problem that no GPS or guidebook can fix.  But for those of us who have turned around, and run back into a relationship with our Heavenly Father, we can be a guide to those who are still wandering.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez begins a new series called Presenting Christ.  We’re learning how to continue the job Jesus started two thousand years ago and show people their need for a Savior!

Satan is a clever deceiver.  The proof is seen in how the Enemy tested Jesus.  In our study on Temptation, we’ve seen how Satan appeals to our desires in order to trip us up.  We’ve also seen how he goes after our ambitions to get us off- track.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez concludes our mini- series by looking at Satan’s most subtle and devious temptation … and that’s twisting the words of the Bible!

God’s Word is the ultimate authority on life.  But is it possible that we can use the Bible to wander off track?  Mike Fabarez explains that it’s very possible!  On this edition of Focal Point, we’re looking at Satan’s temptation of Jesus, and how the Enemy quoted Scripture to try to get Jesus to fall.  How do we avoid the same trap of using God’s Word incorrectly?  For instruction on this important topic, Pastor Mike turns to Luke Chapter 4.

It happens to the best of us.  We’ll catch bits and pieces of a conversation, and before really knowing the context, we jump to conclusions about what’s being said.  When it turns out we were wrong, we might come back and say, “Sorry.  I guess I was just making an assumption!”  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains how to avoid hasty or incorrect conclusions about God or His Word.  We certainly don’t want to risk supposing what God isn’t saying!

When we examine at Jesus’ encounter with Satan in the desert, we discover crucial principles for spiritual warfare.  Earlier we saw how to resist the temptation to fulfill our desires in anything apart from God.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez looks at another temptation from Satan.  It’s the enticement to build our own kingdom!

“You don’t have to go to the cross,” Satan told Jesus in the desert.  “I can give you what you want right now.  I can give you the whole world!”  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez examines Jesus’ response to illustrate how we can resist the same temptation.  Are we looking to gain the praise and prestige of this world?  Or will we spend our time pursuing a heavenly agenda that brings an even greater sense of accomplishment?

Every morning, we’re greeted with a choice.  We can spend the day building our own empire by climbing the ladder of success.  Or we can pursue God’s agenda and partner with Him in growing His kingdom.  So which one is worth our time?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez continues our study on the temptation of Jesus.  We can learn from our Savior’s choice between the successes of this world, or the hope of a greater kingdom.

Let’s be honest; we all have needs.  We need food.  We need love.  We need money to pay our bills.  And the Bible says that God wants to satisfy and supply for each of our necessities!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez warns us that where we run into trouble is when we take the shortcuts to personal satisfaction and don’t find true fulfillment God’s way.

What is your deepest longing?  Maybe it’s a spouse to love and share your life with.  Perhaps it’s more money to pay bills and get out of debt.  Maybe it’s significance and a feeling of accomplishment.  There’s nothing wrong with wanting these good things in life.  But how we satisfy these cravings? On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez is teaching us what the Bible says about gratifying our desires God’s way.

Hunger is a healthy craving for nourishment and energy.  But left unchecked, it can lead us to consume more than we should, or eat the foods that we know are bad for us.  And the same applies to the rest of our personal desires as well!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains how to rein in our inner passions.  It’s not through greater self-denial, but through a better focus on the Savior.

TemptationUnder a relentless sun in a barren wilderness, Jesus showed us how to battle temptation … and win!  Yet, that victory in the desert was more than an object lesson in resisting sin.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez says the temptation of Jesus also played a pivotal role in our salvation.  It’s the outcome of this battle between Jesus and Satan that allows you and I to have hope right now!
