The Old Testament School of Marriage Part 2

September 6, 2010
Mike is in the midst of a mini-series called, “The Old Testament School of Marriage.” We continue where we left off last time by looking at the relationship between Isaac and Rebekah. As we take a closer look at their marriage, we can't help but notice where they went wrong. Interesting enough, it’s often where we go wrong. Pastor Mike sums it up with the word: manipulation. It’s a technique utilized by many in their marriage relationship but it leads to nothing but problems. Pastor Mike offers a few practical steps we can take to avoid it.

Manipulation. It occurs quite a bit in marriages, and it’s a sure sign of a declining marriage. You see it in the spouse that wants to move, or buy a new piece of furniture, or go on the vacation of their dreams. Doing something wrong to get what I want is poisonous to the relationship. Today on Focal Point we continue our series “The Old Testament School of Marriage,” and take a look today at a marriage centered around manipulation. Isaac and Rebekah are not a lot unlike many people today, and that’s why we’d do well to take a peek at where they went wrong.

Last time on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez spent a good deal of time talking to wives, and showed how they are to be submissive, courteous and also exhibit trust in their relationship to their husbands. We’ll switch gears today, and focus primarily on the responsibility of the husband by once again looking at the relationship between Abraham and Sarah. Abraham was a gutsy leader, he was sensitive and sacrificial. Mike will show us how those are good footsteps to follow in, but first we consider Sarah, a model of respect and submission.

Typically when a series on marriage is given by a pastor, he’ll make reference to New Testament passages, but today we’ll take you to the Old Testament. School is just getting started for many of our kids, and today on Focal Point our Old Testament School of Marriage gets underway as well. Pastor Mike Fabarez is about to highlight some wonderful principles we can apply to our marriages, and they’re all found in the Old Testament! We’ll begin today by looking at the relationship between Abraham and Sarah. Pastor Mike describes Sarah as a model of respect for her husband, and it’s easy to see why.

Pastor Mike Fabarez will be finishing up our series, “The Big Questions,” today. Bring up the gift of tongues to someone, and quite often that can lead to a lively discussion. Some Christians are adamant the gift is still in operation today. Others suggest it, along with all the sign gifts, have ceased. Maybe you’re left perplexed, not knowing what to think? Well, pastor Mike will tackle that big question today, but first we’ll touch another hot button issue centering around Tattoos, body piercing and a clothing issue.

Will the church go through the Great Tribulation, or be raptured prior to it? Should we baptize infants? How were those in Old Testament times saved, and where did they go after they died? Big questions, and we’ll go to the Bible for answers today on Focal Point. We’ve set aside the entire month of August to address some big questions on the Bible, theology and the Christian life.

In a setting like this on the radio, we realize some of you are new to the ministry and others are a little more familiar with what goes on here at Focal Point. Perhaps you’re one of the many who is really not all that familiar with pastor Mike and his testimony. Today he’s going to share that with us, as we bring you more questions and answers. This is part of our Big Questions series. Another common question Mike will answer for us has to do with women in the ministry. We’ll get to that towards the end of our time together.

In God’s Word are the answers to life’s big questions. And right now pastor Mike Fabarez is in a series called “The Big Questions.” Today we’ll bring you a portion of a Q and A session recorded at Compass Bible Church. Have you ever had someone come up to you and claim that the King James version of the Bible is the only translation we should be reading? Well our first question centers around that concern, and we’ll soon see that there are some things just not worth fighting over.

We’re going through our “Big Questions” series right now. In a moment we’ll head over to Compass Bible Church in Aliso Viejo, where we have a number of people in the congregation lined up ready to bring their questions to pastor Mike. On occasion we like to go interactive like this, and allow people to share the questions on their mind, and then go to the Bible for answers.

If you’re like most, you have some questions floating around in your mind about the christian life, theology, or on the Bible. You’re definitely not alone. I think we’d be amazed to find out that the very questions we have are often shared by the person in the pew next to us in church. All this week on Focal Point we’re giving people, just like you, the opportunity to pose their questions to pastor Mike Fabarez. Time permitting, we’ll get to quite a few here on this Tuesday.

Our theme verse at Focal Point is in Psalm 43, “Send forth your light and your truth... let them guide me!” Now that’s the compass that gives us direction as we come to you day by day. On today’s interactive Focal Point with Mike Fabarez, we’ve decided to open up the floor to questions over at Compass Bible Church. How should a church be governed? Do demons still possess people in our day? Those are just a couple of questions we’ll toss in Mike’s direction.
