The Importance of Admitting the Obvious, Part 3

June 12, 2014
If you want tacos … you won’t find them at an Italian restaurant.  And if you’re looking for a vegetarian meal … stay away from steakhouses!  Seems so evident, it’s not worth mentioning.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez reminds us of "The Importance of Admitting the Obvious".  Jesus said, Good trees bear good fruit. Bad trees bear bad fruit.  Why explain something so obvious?  Because we may not understand the difference between the two!

The gospels are full of accounts of men and women who had an encounter with Jesus, and their lives were changed forever.  In a single moment, their rebellious heart was changed into a righteous one.  But how does that miraculous process happen?  And what is the evidence of inner transformation that we can point to in our lives?   On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns to a sermon from Jesus for a revealing look at the sequence of salvation.

It’s difficult to solve complex algebra problems without first knowing how to add, subtract and multiply.  And when we’re practicing Christianity in Real Life, it’s also a good idea to review the basics.  A firm grasp of the fundamentals will help us face everyday problems.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez examines the essential principles of the gospel.  What factor does the message, our faith, and good works play in the biblical equation of salvation?

It’s a frustrating nuisance to have a piece of dust in your eye.  That tiny irritant can make vision difficult.  But imagine how challenging it would be to see if you had a plank stuck in your eye instead!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez studies Jesus’ illustration of two people with vision problems.  It’s a warning on the dangers of hypocrisy, but also an affirmation of The Practical Value of Integrity.

Reading God’s Word is like looking into a mirror. And sometimes the image reflected is not the person we really want to be!  It can be unpleasant at times to come face-to-face with our imperfections, but it’s really for our ultimate benefit! On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez continues a message he previously started, called "The Practical Value of Integrity". It’s a challenge to take an honest look at ourselves and make sure we’re living what we believe.

It’s all too easy to point the finger at public figures who claim to believe one way, but live another.  But before we go pointing the finger, Jesus asked us to take another look at ourselves.  Are we committed to a life of integrity?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez talks about closing the gap between what we preach and what we practice.

Most of us have benefitted from the guidance of a spiritual leader. Maybe it was a loving pastor, a wise parent, or a spiritual mentor. It’s important to look to effective leaders who can help point us in the right direction. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez says that you and I are also called to be wise leaders, too! Jesus explained that the spiritual progression of any disciple is from student…to teacher.

An effective guide is someone who knows where to go and how to get there. Chances are, you’ve traveled through your share of mountains and valleys in your walk with God. Could you be the leader someone needs to help guide them in their journey of faith? Currently, we’re in a series called "Christianity in Real Life". It’s a verse-by-verse understanding of Jesus’ sermon in Luke, chapter 6. So far we’ve seen how to handle our finances, deal with sadness, and respond to opposition. On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike looks at what Jesus has to say about another important issue -choosing leaders.

Do people ever get under your skin?  Whether it’s the rude driver, the lazy coworker, or the unkind friend … people can annoy, frustrate and hurt us.  And it can leave us feeling bitter.  In order to resist those negative attitudes and keep a loving mindset toward others, Jesus gave us some helpful instructions in Luke, chapter 6.  On this edition of Focal Point, we’ll look at those guidelines in a message that pastor Mike calls, Godly Perspectives in a Godless World.

When you hear the word, judge, who comes to mind?  A person in a long black robe with a menacing scowl?  Perhaps someone with a critical attitude who’s constantly wagging their finger?  We often equate judgment with condemnation, and we normally shy away from both.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez will put judging in its proper context.  Rather than forbid it, Jesus actually calls us to judge correctly and with love.
