Sexual Sins and Sanctified Bodies, Part 2a

August 13, 2012
Try as we may, it’s difficult to avoid the blatant sexual images we see on billboards, magazines and movies. In a world that celebrates personal desire, it’s important we go back to God’s Word for instruction on God's original purpose for physical intimacy. Today, Mike Fabarez approaches this sensitive topic with a study in 1 Corinthians. Chances are, many of us need to un-learn some of the ways we think about sex.

He Is Risen?
Culture is doing its best to convince the world there is nothing special about Jesus. And, as Christians, sometimes we have a difficult time communicating the historical facts of the resurrection. Jesus' victory over death is central to the Christian faith and now you can get straightforward and practical facts from history why we can believe Jesus really did rise from the dead. These days, people go to all extremes in the way they treat their bodies. From expensive surgeries and dangerous diets to harmful addictions and abuse. The prevailing feeling is, “It’s my body…I can do what I want!” Mike Fabarez will point out today on Focal Point…the Designer of our body has specific instructions for how we’re called to use it. We’re picking up where we left off in a series about "Sexual Sins and Sanctified Bodies."

Every new appliance comes with a tag that reads, “Manufacturer’s Warnings”. On it you’ll find guidelines for properly using and operating the machinery, without causing damage or hurting yourself! Today on Focal Point Mike Fabarez talks about God’s warnings for His creation and outlines biblical principles for using our bodies according to His plan. It’s the very first portion of a timely study in 1 Corinthians about "Sexual Sins and Sanctified Bodies."

The steely captains who navigate their ships through frigid Northern seas understand the misleading appearance of icebergs. What looks like a small ice cap on the surface is hiding a larger and more dangerous object below! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez applies that lesson to the church, and helps us recognize the small indicators of looming issues in our hearts. When we see anger, bitterness, or arguments it’s likely…the problem is bigger than you think.

When your car starts making an unusual sound, how do you respond? You could try to ignore it, since the car seems to be running just fine. Or you might choose to take your car to the mechanic. That subtle noise could be an indication of a major engine problem! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez points out that minor symptoms in the church are often signs of something much more problematic.

In most bookstores you’ll find an entire section devoted to what are called, “self-help” books. These volumes promise to fix any problem big or small…from reducing stress to making friends. While these books may hold practical tips, they always fall short of God’s final Word on right living. Today on Focal Point, pastor and teacher Mike Fabarez reminds us that we already have the authoritative guide to handling all of life’s situations.

Serious athletes exercise rigorously, eat healthy, and train diligently with a clear goal in mind. They know that the sacrifices they make right now will pay dividends when it really counts. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez draws on this analogy and helps us train spiritually for the life to come. Compared to the joy of what’s ahead, the sorrow and struggles we experience in this life are well worth the cost!

We all have certain pet peeves that get under our skin. Maybe it’s people talking loudly on their cell phones in restaurants, or cutting in line at the supermarket. Or it could be something much bigger like personal injustice, or disrespect. Today on Focal Point Mike Fabarez asks us to evaluate the issues that cause conflict in our relationships and reconsider whether it’s worth the fight.

Remember hearing the phrase, don’t make mountains out of molehills? It’s a quaint way of saying, don’t blow little things out of proportion. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez helps us maintain our perspective when we experience conflict. In the heat of the moment, when someone’s taken advantage of us or wronged us in some way, it’s only natural to defend our position. Today we’ll find reason to surrender those battles.

As followers of Jesus, we’ve been commissioned to take the Gospel message out into the world. It’s a message of grace, love and forgiveness found only in Jesus Christ. But when sin is glaring in our lives, or in the church, it can severely obstruct the truths we’re trying to convey. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez cautions us against pointing out sin in the world, before we address the sin that’s in the church.

With all the sin and evil in the world, how do we remain holy? Sometimes it feels like the only solution would be complete retreat, so we can follow God free of temptation and distractions. As we’ll discover today on Focal Point, God has a different plan for us in mind. Mike Fabarez continues a study in 1 Corinthians, and lays out practical principles for holy living in a fallen world.
