Seeing My Growth for the Good of Others, Part 3

June 4, 2014
Most of us have benefitted from the guidance of a spiritual leader. Maybe it was a loving pastor, a wise parent, or a spiritual mentor. It’s important to look to effective leaders who can help point us in the right direction. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez says that you and I are also called to be wise leaders, too! Jesus explained that the spiritual progression of any disciple is from student…to teacher.

An effective guide is someone who knows where to go and how to get there. Chances are, you’ve traveled through your share of mountains and valleys in your walk with God. Could you be the leader someone needs to help guide them in their journey of faith? On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez is talking about the importance of choosing and becoming godly leaders.

Currently, we’re in a series called "Christianity in Real Life". It’s a verse-by-verse understanding of Jesus’ sermon in Luke, chapter 6. So far we’ve seen how to handle our finances, deal with sadness, and respond to opposition. On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike looks at what Jesus has to say about another important issue -choosing leaders.

Do people ever get under your skin?  Whether it’s the rude driver, the lazy coworker, or the unkind friend … people can annoy, frustrate and hurt us.  And it can leave us feeling bitter.  In order to resist those negative attitudes and keep a loving mindset toward others, Jesus gave us some helpful instructions in Luke, chapter 6.  On this edition of Focal Point, we’ll look at those guidelines in a message that pastor Mike calls, Godly Perspectives in a Godless World.

When you hear the word, judge, who comes to mind?  A person in a long black robe with a menacing scowl?  Perhaps someone with a critical attitude who’s constantly wagging their finger?  We often equate judgment with condemnation, and we normally shy away from both.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez will put judging in its proper context.  Rather than forbid it, Jesus actually calls us to judge correctly and with love.

Our world is far from perfect.  However, many Christians are hesitant to address the wrongs they see in the culture, in the family, or in the church.  Why?  Because we’ve been reminded over and over again that Jesus said, “Judge not, lest you be judged.” On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez helps us see Jesus’ words in context. Because if we’re not judging sin, we’re not doing our job!

The word love can have many different meanings.  In the same breath we can say, “I love my wife,” and “I love brownies.”  Obviously, we don’t think about our spouse the same way we think about food.  What we need is a definition of what love really is!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez studies Jesus definition of love.  And it is radically different than anything we might have heard!

“You scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours” seems to be the standard cultural contract of our day.  It’s an understanding based on mutual self-interest.  We agree to love those…who love us in return. But on this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that Jesus calls us to adopt a more revolutionary way of caring for others. In Luke, chapter 6, Jesus delivered a sermon that raised the bar beyond the tenets of “The Golden Rule.”

Jesus said, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”  Many people know this as The Golden Rule … and even those who don’t consider themselves Christians agree it’s a good rule to follow.  That’s because The Golden Rule is generally believed to be a call to common courtesy.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that Jesus isn’t calling us to polite interaction, but Exceptional Love with Exceptional Motives!

Jesus said “Love your enemies.”  But that brings up the question … just who, exactly, is our enemy?  Is it the guy who cuts us off on the freeway?  The cranky next-door neighbor?  Could it be that person who’s always getting under our skin?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez puts Jesus’ teaching in its proper context to identify who are our opponents are and how to respond to their opposition pointed against us.

It’s the friend who excludes you from the social circle.  It’s the coworker who always has a sarcastic remark directed right at you.  It’s the boss who passes you up for a promotion.  How are we supposed to deal with mean and demanding people?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez is in Luke, chapter 6.  It’s a well known but often misunderstand passage on responding to our enemies.
