Prayer Basics

May 31, 2010
Throughout this month pastor Mike Fabarez has been focusing our attention on prayer, and as we wrap up the series today our aim is to take our prayer life to a whole new level. And that is to be more consistent, thoughtful and specific. When we left you last time, Mike said we need start with a decision to pray, and then guard it. Now we see how thanksgiving is to be woven into our prayer time.

The profound privilege of prayer is our Focal Point on this Friday. I think 99.9% of us would admit our prayer life isn’t where it needs to be. Let’s see if we can get our prayer lives kick started by turning to Colossians four and receive some prayer basics.

It was Richard Trench that said “Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance but cooperating with His willingness.” That’s so true isn’t it, and yet so many of us are reluctant to cooperate with His willingness. Many times we want our own way, which runs in the opposite direction of God’s way. We turn back to First John on this Thursday and examine the words of chapter three, and verses 21-24.

Have you ever asked yourself, “Does God really listen to our prayers, and answer them?” Here on our Wednesday Focal Point, pastor Mike Fabarez presents a message centered around prayers that get answered. It’s just part of our ongoing series on prayer. Pastor Mike will show us two things that God requires of us before He’ll answer our prayers.

Throughout His Word God says to us “Call on Me and I’ll answer, ask and I’ll give it to you!” If we believe that to be true, why do we pray so little? It so often sits in our spiritual arsenal, and we rarely access it. Today on Focal Point the plan is to resuscitate our prayer lives. We’ll go to First John five, and verses 14-15 for some much needed encouragement.

It’s good to know that Christians can call upon the Lord, and He is never too busy to take your call and the line is always clear and open. Not only does He hear us, He answers too! That’s a proposition that’s reliable. Join us for this Monday edition of Focal Point as we continue our series on Prayer.

Think about the worst thing someone has ever done to you. How did you respond? Maybe you’re still holding a grudge, and haven’t forgiven them now years later? The world would say, “That’s your right!” However, God calls us to follow in the footsteps of Christ - who forgave us of a debt we could not pay. Today on Focal Point we’ll be encouraged in that direction.

Do you ever feel like your prayers are just bouncing off the ceiling, and not getting anywhere? It may be due to a lack of loving forgiveness with others! We’ll see how that hinders prayer today on Focal Point.

Most, if not all of us, have family or even friends that are apart from Christ. And maybe you’ve been praying for them for years, and still their heart is as hard as a rock. Today on Focal Point Pastor Mike Fabarez will be continuing his series on Prayer and give us three specific prayers that we can offer to God for our non-christian friends and family members.

As Christians we long for heaven, and sometimes we may wonder why we are still here. Pastor Mike Fabarez will identify the core task of the Christian while we’re here on earth, today on Focal Point and we’ll learn how to be “Couriers for Christ.” As we go to the Lord, we should be praying for the unsaved people we know. Mike will give us three things we can pray for them today.

It’s not hard to find complainers is it? In fact, you may find them hard to be around. Well, the Lord doesn’t like complaining either. He wants us to be truly thankful, and we have a lot to be thankful for as believers. Today on Focal Point, pastor Mike Fabarez encourages us to realize that God deserves more gratitude.
