There you are going about your day, and you’re struck with a temptation. What do you do? Do you give it all you’ve got, and try to resist it in your own strength? There is a much a better way, and pastor Mike Fabarez will lay it out for us today on Focal Point. We’re in a series of studies called, “Moving Forward.” As we Move Forward in the christian life you can bet there will be temptations to sin along the way. Let’s see together how the Spirit of God can help us overcome these temptations.

One of the hardest animals to catch is the ring-tailed monkey. For the Zulus in Africa, however, it's simple. The method the Zulus use is based on knowledge of the animal. Their trap is nothing more than a melon growing on a vine. The seeds of this melon are a favorite of the monkey. Satan knows what kind of bait to use to get us to sin. Today on Focal Point, we dive back into pastor Mike Fabarez’ series, “Moving Forward.” Throughout the series we’ve learned we’re supposed to be progressing in sanctification. By that we mean, you’re to be less like the old you, and more like Jesus as time goes on. We noticed recently that without the Spirit indwelling us, this just isn’t possible. So, we must make sure the Spirit of God resides in us, and then differ to the Spirit’s agenda.

Today we're again discussing sanctification, which in essence is becoming less like the old you and more like Christ. For that to happen we must have the Spirit dwelling in us. Clearly there are a great number of people today that are experiencing an external pressure from the Spirit, but they do not have an internal reality. They wonder why they’re not progressing and growing. Sanctification will only happen if we’re truly a Christian. Mike explains how we can know if the Spirit is in us.

Today we enter into an area of confusion for many people. How can we be sure that God’s Spirit dwells in us, and that we’re really a Christian? The Holy Spirit can have a great deal of influence in our lives prior to conversion, but some mistake that with being a Christian. We’re talking about sanctification right now on Focal Point, in Romans seven and eight. So why then would we bring our justification into the mix today you ask? Our sanctification is predicated on our justification, and we really need to understand how we’re made right in order to Move Forward. Mike encouraged us to savor our justification last time we were together, and now we go on to see why policing our motives is a necessary activity.

Recently we’ve been discussing sanctification, and how we become more like Christ and sin less. Mike is about to underscore that if we’re going to proceed in the right direction, in this whole matter of sanctification, we need to be absolutely clear about the finished work of Christ that secured our justification. He points out that all of our sanctification stems from a right understanding of justification.

We’ve seen throughout our study of Romans seven, that God’s desire is for us to be more and more like Christ. The question we present today is, “How is that accomplished?” Is it just a matter of trying your best? We really can’t get to that place in our own strength, and God knows that. That’s why He’s given us a helper, the Holy Spirit.

About Pastor Mike Fabarez
