Moving Forward Part 5 - Live by the Spirit

June 28, 2010
Today we enter into an area of confusion for many people. How can we be sure that God’s Spirit dwells in us, and that we’re really a Christian? The Holy Spirit can have a great deal of influence in our lives prior to conversion, but some mistake that with being a Christian. That’s far different than having the Spirit enter your life and change your heart. To help us see that difference join pastor Mike in Romans eight.

We’re talking about sanctification right now on Focal Point, in Romans seven and eight. So why then would we bring our justification into the mix today you ask? Our sanctification is predicated on our justification, and we really need to understand how we’re made right in order to Move Forward. Mike encouraged us to savor our justification last time we were together, and now we go on to see why policing our motives is a necessary activity.

Recently we’ve been discussing sanctification, and how we become more like Christ and sin less. Mike is about to underscore that if we’re going to proceed in the right direction, in this whole matter of sanctification, we need to be absolutely clear about the finished work of Christ that secured our justification. He points out that all of our sanctification stems from a right understanding of justification.

We’ve seen throughout our study of Romans seven, that God’s desire is for us to be more and more like Christ. The question we present today is, “How is that accomplished?” Is it just a matter of trying your best? We really can’t get to that place in our own strength, and God knows that. That’s why He’s given us a helper, the Holy Spirit.

Many of us grew up reading the children's story, “The Little Engine that Could.” A long train needed to be pulled over a high mountain. A small engine agrees to try, and succeeds while repeating the motto “I think I can.” Is that the way it works in the Christian life? Will optimism and hard work lead us to sanctification? Today on Focal Point pastor Mike Fabarez is going to show us that any attempts to please God without the Holy Spirit’s enablement will fail.

Today on Focal Point we open Romans seven, and a passage that leaves many Christians scratching their heads, wondering what the apostle Paul is getting at. Not everyone in evangelical Christianity come to the same conclusion as we’re about to see. In order to arrive at a Biblical understanding of this chapter, pastor Mike Fabarez is going to lay an important foundation.

Are you a fan of G.P.S.? It's especially helpful as you're traveling in unfamiliar territory. It serves as a road map, to get us to our destination. On today's Focal Point, see the intended purpose behind God’s law. It’s like a road map to Christ-likeness. It shows us where we’re going, and what holiness looks like. Pastor Mike says we need to allow it to drive us to the cross, and then to reinforce what is holy.

Today on Focal Point we get back into our series “Moving Forward.” God’s will for us is to be sanctified. To put it another way, He wants us to become more and more like Christ and to be holy. Here on this Thursday, we’re going to notice how He uses His rules to not only expose our sin, but to drive us to the cross. Both are absolutely necessary for growth in our lives.

If you’ve been with us for our series of studies in Romans you know we’ve stressed that we’re saved by grace, and not by trying to live up to the standard of the law. We’ve also seen that the law was given to expose our sin, and help us see our need for grace. Today Mike is going to encourage us now to let the law expose the depth of our sin and that certainly includes the process of sanctification.

Do you enjoy pulling out an old photo album? As you thumb through those are you ever struck with how much the people you love have changed? We’re also supposed to change spiritually, and become more and more like Christ. Today on Focal Point, we’re going to notice what it takes to move forward in the Christian life. If it’s just you and the rules, it isn’t going to work. Let’s see what it takes, by joining Mike in Romans seven.

To become more and more like Jesus; that’s God’s will for us. Maybe to you that sounds like a tall order that’s out of reach! How is it even possible to bear fruit for God like Jesus did? Today on Focal Point we begin a new series called “Moving Forward.” Throughout this study we’ll learn how to move forward in the Christian life.
