Money Madness Part 3

November 16, 2010
Turn on the TV and it won’t take long to run into an advertisement encouraging you to buy something you don’t have, and to be dissatisfied with what you do have. Then there are the friends down the street that have the nice home you have always wanted. Or someone pulls into work with the car of your dreams! It’s about that time that we start to covet right? Today on Focal Point we’ll uncover the cure for coveting, and it’s found in Christ.

The boxer Muhammad Ali was known as "the champ," arguably the most famous athlete of his generation. He was on top, in the world’s eye. Ali himself now says, "I had the world, and it wasn't nothin'."  We’ve heard that time and time again from the rich and famous, and yet many Christians still think that if they just had more, then they would be happy and secure. Today on Focal Point, Pastor Mike Fabarez visits Ecclesiastes five, and verses 10-20, to help us keep our financial priorities straight.

In 1975, six armed gunmen broke into the deposit boxes in a London bank and stole valuables worth more than seven million dollars. One lady, whose jewelry was appraised at $500,000, cried, "Everything I had was in there. My whole life was in that box." What a sad commentary on her values! And yet, wouldn’t you agree that describes a great number of people today? They think life is found in their stuff! It’s time to ask ourselves if our priorities are straight! It’s no secret that materialism is a real problem in our day, but it is possible to find peace and contentment in the midst of the storm.

It’s really sad to see how some have lost many or all of their financial investments in recent years. There really are no guarantees when in comes to investing in the Stock Market or the things of this world. Today we’re encouraged to be an investment for God, by investing in the lives of others. While this will involved a lot of pain and hard work, the payoff is incredible. It's a can’t lose proposition, in fact!

Have you been following the Stock Market lately? The happiness and security of some hinges on what it does from day to day. That can be a wild ride! While financial investments can be a little dicey at times, there is an investment you can make that is as sure as sure can get. Today on Focal Point, pastor Mike Fabarez encourages us to make some spiritual investments. One of the best ways to be a good investment for God, is to invest in other lives.

It seems like more and more churches these days are involved in a building program of some sort. Perhaps even your own church is? In Second Chronicles six, Solomon is praying to God in response to the building God just gave to Him and the people of Israel. We’ll take a look at his prayer of dedication in the minutes that are ahead of us. Here’s Mike to show us that when God gives a good gift, it’s not only a privilege but a responsibility.

Many of us love to give gifts to our loved ones. Did you know God loves to give gifts too! Today on Focal Point, we’ll see the privilege and responsibility of giving thanks and praise when the Lord showers us with something good. Our study is framed around Second Chronicles six, and verses 12-42. It’s here Solomon leads the people in a dedication prayer, right on the heals of God doing something good for them.

Last time on Focal Point, Pastor Mike Fabarez encouraged us to connect more often with other Christians, and he offered a few suggestions on how to do that. What are we trying to accomplish by connecting with others? We’ll pursue the answer to that question here on this Friday broadcast. Let's find our place in Acts 2:42 and first draw out the value of praying for others.

“I can handle things myself! I’m better off alone. I don’t need church.” You’ve probably heard people say things like that, if not said it yourself. The trend these days is toward isolation, but that leads to devastation. The church was designed by God to be like a team, and not a solo act. Are you on the team, or somewhere on the sidelines? Think about that for the next half-hour, won’t you? Today on Focal Point we’ll see the need to be more intentional about biblical fellowship.

Have you noticed the growing trend in the church, and that is, most people really aren’t connected with each other? A good number of Christians come to church for an hour or two on Sunday, say hi to the greeter at the door, and quietly make their exit at the end of the service. That’s about the extent of their church involvement. Maybe it’s even less. Today pastor Mike Fabarez is going to show us what it truly means to be connected with each other, and why we need to do it more. It’s actually far more than church attendance.

Today on Focal Point we open our eyes to the harvest and recognize the opportunity in front of us. Soon we’ll be gathering around the table for Thanksgiving, and before you know it Christmas will be here. If you’re like most you’ll have a few gatherings with family and friends! Some of them don’t know the Lord. This is one among many opportunities we have to point people to Christ. If our eyes are open to the harvest, we’ll recognize these opportunities before us.
