The Brevity of Life

When we experience the death of a loved one, it’s a somber reminder that life is short.  And while we all must face death ourselves one day, most of us would rather not dwell on our mortality.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez urges us face our future and contemplate The Brevity of Life.  When we grasp how brief our time truly is, it can give us much- needed perspective on what really matters.

When Nothing Seems FairDo you become frustrated when those who take shortcuts, cut corners, or travel out of bounds seem to come out ahead?  In the meantime, those of us who follow Christ and keep to the straight and narrow path seem to get left behind.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez reminds us that God judges our success not by who reaches the finish line first, but rather, how we got there.  It’s an important insight from the book of Psalms.

When Nothing Seems Fair How is it that faithful Christians who strive to please God with their lives still battle with health issues, financial problems, and relationship troubles?  Yet, many who reject God seem to live in the lap of luxury and sail through life with ease?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez opens the book of Psalms to find the answer and gain a biblical perspective on “the Good”, “the Bad”, and “the Ugly.”

When Nothing Seems FairWe love to watch movies where the hero triumphs over the nefarious plans of the villain and ultimately saves the day.  But in real life, sometimes the bad guys win and the good guys are left holding the bag.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez addresses the apparent injustice we see in our world.  When the life of an unbeliever seems easy, and the life of a Christian seems difficult, Psalm 73 helps put the situation in perspective.

A God in ControlIn this life we’re sure to face serious storms.  Some so big they threaten to knock us right off our feet!  In these frightening moments, we need something stable we can cling too.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez encourages us to take our eyes off of what we’re up against and turn them towards the One who stands up for us!  As His children, God has promised to be our anchor when the storms get rough.

A God in Control We never seem to run out of things to worry about.  Around every corner is another situation that can trigger a sense of anxiety, concern, or fear.  How do we replace these uneasy feelings about our circumstances with a growing sense of peace and confidence?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez provides a biblical formula for trading our worry for security in God.  It’s an encouraging insight coming from our series in the book of Psalms.

A God in Control It’s no secret that we live in an unstable world.  Whether it’s navigating the swings in the economy, upheavals in politics, or uncertainties at home, it can feel like we’re walking on shaky ground.  Where do we find solid footing and a firm gasp on life?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez directs us to Psalm 46, a song that speaks of a rock-solid Presence in our lives.

Guilt & Forgiveness In our culture, guilt is seen as a bad thing.  We try to smother it, ignore it, excuse it, banish it, anything but face it head on.  Still, no matter how hard we try to suppress those painful feelings of conviction, they never really seem to go away.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez looks at God’s model for dealing with guilt.  In Psalm 32, we find a biblical perspective on remorse and how we can experience real and lasting grace.

Guilt & ForgivenessWhen we mess up or make a mistake, the guilt rings loud in our hearts and minds.  To drown it out, we try to cover our ears and ignore the sting of our conscience.  Or we seek immediate relief, rather than deal with the problem.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez asks us to take a biblical perspective on the pain of conscience.  Rather than run from the ache, God could be calling us to face it head on!

Guilt & ForgivenessPain is a natural indicator of a problem.  When we touch a hot stove or stub our toe, our bodies let us know immediately.  And when we sin, we often feel that twinge of conscience right away.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez encourages us to pay attention to the warning signs of guilt.  If we follow the example found in the Psalms, we’ll discover that pain can lead us right into grace.

Following the Good ShepherdStrong winds tore at the sails and masts, towering waves battered the tiny boat, and every disciple feared the worst.  Yet, Jesus was fast asleep and unbothered.  How could He find peace in a storm like that?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez says that as followers of Christ, we too can have hope when things look hopeless.  In Psalm 23, we find a path that leads to green pastures and still waters in the midst of stormy seas.
