How to Get Eternal Life Part 4c - The Only Right Response

October 14, 2010
There you are driving along, thinking you’re on the right road to your destination. Then down the road a bit, you see a sign, and realize you had it all wrong! I think we’ve all been there, and it’s also a common experience in the spiritual realm. Many think they’re on the highway to heaven, but they really aren’t. Maybe today’s Focal Point will signal to you that you really aren’t heading in the right direction. As we’re about to see today, many really haven’t embraced the true Gospel.

How do we get eternal life? That’s the question we’ve framed our present series around. As we’ll see today, repentance is a big part of the answer to that question. So it’s important to understand what it is, and if we’ve done it. Sadly repentance is rarely preached, and few understand what it truly is. The Rich Young Ruler wasn’t willing to repent from his sins, and because of that, the door to eternal life didn’t open to him. He didn’t turn from his path to God’s. Will you?

Many so-called Gospel presentations and even tracts do not include "biblical repentance.” People are led to believe that as long as they walked an aisle, prayed a prayer, they’re right with God. You look at their lives though, and they’re no different than the world. This viewpoint is diametrically opposed to message of Jesus, the apostles, and prophets of the Old Testament. They gave repentance an important place in their preaching of the gospel - as should we. Repentance is the necessary response to the Gospel. Since it’s important, let’s make sure we understand it.

The Gospel is clearly portrayed for us in the Scriptures, but in our day this message is not being conveyed. Some are distorting the message, or taking away from it, and some attempt to add to it. Today on Focal Point we’re pleased to uphold and proclaim the biblical Gospel message, as part of our “How to Get Eternal Life” series. Pastor Mike Fabarez is having us consider the story of the Rich Young Ruler.

Think for a moment of the scores of people that will arrive on Judgment Day before the Lord, thinking they have eternal life, but are stunned by the news that they really don’t. Could it get any worse than that? Sadly that will be the case for a large number of people, but we want to make sure we don’t fall into that camp! There just may be some things or people standing in the way between you and eternal life as we’ll soon see. Let's set out to identify those idols.

Imagine someone coming up to you saying, “Sell all you have, give it to the poor, and then come and follow me!” You’d either say yes, and go all in, or you’d walk away from the deal! That’s exactly what Jesus said to the Rich Young Ruler. He went away sad. Now each of us faces this crossroad: Are we going to do what Jesus says, or what we want?? Today on Focal Point Pastor Mike Fabarez encourages us to count the costs of being a Christian. As we launch part three of the series, Mike addresses a number of things that stand in the way of getting eternal life.

Again Mike will draw our attention to Matthew nineteen, and verses 17-22. When we left you last time, pastor Mike showed us that if we’re going to get right with God we’ve gotta keep all the rules. Problem is, we can’t. The only hope we have is to rely on Christ, who kept those rules for us, and paid the price for our rule breaking. We get started in Romans three today.

It’s important for us to understand that we’ve broken God’s rules, and we’re deserving of punishment. Pastor Mike Fabarez will show us why we need to admit this, as we bring you another Focal Point. We’re moving through Mike’s new series, “How to Get Eternal Life.” It’s time to get honest with ourselves and admit rule breakers deserve to be punished. Join us in Matthew nineteen, and verses 17-22.

How do we get eternal life? Perhaps there’s no greater question to pose, than that one, and that’s a question we all need to come to terms with. Fortunately for us, Jesus gave us a very clear, and concise answer in Matthew nineteen. Today we enter part two of our “How to Get Eternal Life,” series. Having already discussed the importance of getting God straightened out in our minds, we now see why we need to get honest about ourselves.

Many in our world carry with them through life a me-centered mentality. It’s easy for us to think the world revolves around us. Now take that into the spiritual realm, and all too many think the point of salvation is us as well. In reality God, is the center of the Gospel. Pastor Mike Fabarez will draw that out from Matthew nineteen today on Focal Point. And in the passage before us Jesus spends some time talking about eternal life with a rich young ruler. It’s important to notice that Jesus has this young man ponder God’s perfection to start off with. That’s the place for us to start as well.

How do we get to heaven? Ask the average Joe on the street and they’re likely to say there are a lot of ways to get there. Currently on Focal Point we’re turning to the only opinion that really matters - and that’s God’s! In Matthew nineteen Jesus had a conversation with a rich young ruler, and this very question came up. It’s interesting that Jesus starts His reply by having the young man rethink God. And perhaps that’s exactly what you need to do?
