God's Expatriates, Part 1b

January 20, 2012
Most of us have a healthy measure of national pride. We're grateful for our heritage, and the freedom we enjoy. Even greater than our national heritage is our spiritual citizenship. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez delivers a study called, "God's Expatriates." It's a fascinating message about faith and government.

He Is Risen?
Culture is doing its best to convince the world there is nothing special about Jesus. And, as Christians, sometimes we have a difficult time communicating the historical facts of the resurrection. Jesus' victory over death is central to the Christian faith and now you can get straightforward and practical facts from history why we can believe Jesus really did rise from the dead. When we choose to follow Christ we place ourselves under His Kingdom rule. While Jesus is our main authority, how do we interact with the local governing authorities? What role do they play in executing God's justice? That's our topic today on Focal Point. Mike Fabarez is looking at the biblical teaching on government.

As children we're taught to play nice. Roughhousing and retaliation were off limits, as we learned to get along with others. While it's good and right to expect this behavior from kids, it wouldn't be accurate to describe our Heavenly Father as always being "nice." He's fair, to be sure, but certainly not passive! Today on Focal Point, we're looking at an aspect of God's character we don't often hear about.

When you think about your favorite worship songs, what are the themes you like to sing about? If your experience is like most people, usually we tend to emphasize God's grace, mercy and love. These things are certainly aspects of God worth celebrating, but when is the last time you worshipped God for His justice? Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez introduces us to some Old Testament songs that might sound odd to our modern ears.

When someone unfairly accuses us of something we didn't do, or betrays a relationship once held in trust, it's tempting to lash back and take revenge. Taking matters into our own hands is not a wise choice. In the Bible we get a privileged glimpse into the character of God. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez helps us understand what it means to rest in His justice.

When we work for a business or an organization, we're held to certain standards and expectations. How we perform in our position reflects on the company, whether for good or for bad. Today on Focal Point, we'll find that the same thing is true as a follower of Jesus. Mike Fabarez is drawing principles from Romans 12 about conducting ourselves as children of God.

When people find out that you're a Christian they usually begin to watch you a little closer. They'll notice the things you say, the way you act and the attitudes you carry throughout the day. Sometimes it's a great opportunity to demonstrate the love of Jesus, but often it can get downright exhausting! Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez talks about upholding Christ's reputation by the way we live.

In a healthy family environment, moms, dads, sisters and brothers share in one another's life. If someone is sick, the other members look after them. If someone is discouraged, another cheers them up. The joys and the sorrows of each one is shared and carried by all. Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains how followers of Christ should have this same attitude, especially when it comes to suffering.

Over the centuries, courageous men and women have faced persecution for their faith. Many have endured prison and ridicule, others have paid with their very lives. It's likely you and I won't go to jail for our beliefs, but when we do experience opposition, how should we respond? Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez outlines biblical counsel for difficult times.

Every day we have all kinds of opportunities to express our faith. But how do we measure whether we're really making a difference? Today on Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that a life well lived can be recognized by one thing in particular, and that's persecution. When we choose to follow Christ, we reject the values of this world, and our convictions don't always make us very popular with the culture.

Remember those famous lines from Shakespeare, "If you wrong us, shall we not revenge?" We can all relate to those sentiments, can't we? When someone harms us, it's only natural to want to return the offense. Today on Focal Point, we'll talk about difficult people and a biblical way to respond in those awkward moments. Mike Fabarez reminds us that justice is in God's hands, and it's not our role to even the score.
