Faith, Stress and Money Part 1

November 26, 2010
Maybe you’ve had a well meaning friend come up to you and say, “God wants you to be prosperous,” implying that since you’re in financial difficulty you’re in sin. But is that really what Scripture teaches? Actually quite the opposite, as we’ll discover today on Focal Point. Pastor Mike Fabarez has a message today dealing with faith, stress and money. Perhaps you’re among the many that has lost your job, or at the very least have felt the affects of this down economy? I think you’ll find this study encouraging, as Mike has us rethink biblical faith in a down economy.

As you’re talking to God, do you find yourself focusing a great deal on your needs, problems, and what you’d like to see Him do in your life and those you care about? While our Lord wants to hear those requests, He also takes great delight when we have grateful hearts. So often we neglect to thank Him! Today we’re going to work on being thankful. As we’ll soon see, there is a great deal to be thankful for not only on Thanksgiving, but all year!

Don’t you find it difficult to be around a complainer? As we’ll see today on Focal Point, God doesn’t think very highly of complaining either. Instead, He wants us to be thankful. Pastor Mike Fabarez will reveal a couple of components that should be found in our thanksgiving, and also give us a few things we can be thankful to God for. A very timely message to get you all ready for Thanksgiving tomorrow.

Well in just a couple of days, we’ll be sitting around the table with our family or friends for Thanksgiving. It's a day that we traditionally set aside to collectively say thanks. But thanks to who, and what are we to be thankful about? That’s where today’s Focal Point will come in handy. Pastor Mike Fabarez is about to give us a few things to be thankful to God for, not only at this time of year but all year long.

If you’ve ever been to a sporting event, you’ve probably noticed on the big screen what they refer to as an “Applause-o-meter.” It's a sort of gauge as to how loud the crowd is, at any given time. It’s usually coupled with the phrase, “Make some noise!” If there was an applause-o-meter in heaven, you could be sure that it would max out. Heaven is going to feature loud, thunderous praise. That’s the picture we get from Psalm 100, and today Pastor Mike Fabarez encourages us to cheer God on, and celebrate Him. He is so worthy of purposeful praise.

What is the ultimate reason you exist? Is it bound up in your job, family, or some pleasurable experience as so many think? Actually the Scriptures are quite clear on the matter, and today on Focal Point, we uncover the answer from Psalm 100. The reason you and I exist is to worship and serve our Creator. The book of Psalms really details how to do this, so that’s why we’re headed there.

"I’m afraid they will get upset with me! I just don’t know what to say, or how to say it. Well, God’s sovereign, so if they’re going to be saved the Lord will take care of it and so I don’t need to speak up!" Excuses why people don’t share their faith are a mile long, and maybe you have one of your own. Today on Focal Point we’re reminded of our calling as Christians, and that is to tell the lost world they need to be reconciled to God. There really is no good reason not to do this.

There are lost people all around us, from our neighbors down the street, to our coworkers, or very own family. Have you every shared Christ with these people? Maybe you’ve bought into the mentality of there are two things we never should discuss, “Religion and politics.” As we’re about to see today, we must care about the unsaved and share God’s message of salvation with them. God call us to that, and as His Ambassadors He wants to make His appeal through us.

Turn on the TV and it won’t take long to run into an advertisement encouraging you to buy something you don’t have, and to be dissatisfied with what you do have. Then there are the friends down the street that have the nice home you have always wanted. Or someone pulls into work with the car of your dreams! It’s about that time that we start to covet right? Today on Focal Point we’ll uncover the cure for coveting, and it’s found in Christ.

The boxer Muhammad Ali was known as "the champ," arguably the most famous athlete of his generation. He was on top, in the world’s eye. Ali himself now says, "I had the world, and it wasn't nothin'."  We’ve heard that time and time again from the rich and famous, and yet many Christians still think that if they just had more, then they would be happy and secure. Today on Focal Point, Pastor Mike Fabarez visits Ecclesiastes five, and verses 10-20, to help us keep our financial priorities straight.

In 1975, six armed gunmen broke into the deposit boxes in a London bank and stole valuables worth more than seven million dollars. One lady, whose jewelry was appraised at $500,000, cried, "Everything I had was in there. My whole life was in that box." What a sad commentary on her values! And yet, wouldn’t you agree that describes a great number of people today? They think life is found in their stuff! It’s time to ask ourselves if our priorities are straight! It’s no secret that materialism is a real problem in our day, but it is possible to find peace and contentment in the midst of the storm.
