Drink Your Milk Part 1b

March 23, 2011
Repentance and faith... Scripture teaches us that’s what it takes to get into the family of God. However, there are quite a few myths floating around today that lead people to believe otherwise. Maybe you’ve bought into one or more of them? Last time, we looked at a few myths about repentance, and now today, Pastor Mike Fabarez has us consider a few myths that have to do with faith. We’re referring to it as a crash course in repentance and faith.

Could you imagine taking calculus in Kindergarten, before you’ve taken any basic math? That would be foolish obviously. Today on Focal Point, Pastor Mike Fabarez shows us that there are a number of basics in the Christian life we need to get down first before we go move on to the meat. If you had parents who were concerned about your calcium intake, no doubt you heard them say, “Drink your milk!” That’s sort of what the writer of Hebrews is going to tell us in this chapter. Except milk in this case has to do with the basics of the message of the Gospel.

No doubt you remember the food pyramid in your health class in school that depicts what a healthy balanced diet looks like. From the bread and cereals group at the base, right on up to the fats, oils and sweets at the top. We all know the value of a good diet and a lot of exercise! We’re really not here today to make you feel guilty for not eating or exercising properly, but we do want to encourage you to shoot for a better spiritual diet and more spiritual exercise today on Focal Point. And that’s far more important than our physical health. Yet few Christians are where they should be in relation to their spiritual age.

There’s a story of a man, after 25 years with one company, was still doing the same old job and drawing the same salary. Finally he went to his boss and told him he felt he had been neglected. “After all,” he said, “I’ve had a quarter of a century of experience.” “My dear fellow,” sighed the boss, “you haven’t had a quarter of a century of experience, you’ve had one experience for a quarter of a century.” Sadly that could be said of countless Christians. Today on Focal Point, we not only consider how old we are spiritually but what our growth looks like in relation to that age. Pastor Mike Fabarez says we should care about the calendar, because God does!

Imagine standing before a judge, everyone knows you’re completely guilty, and the punishment for what you’ve done is death! Along comes your attorney who not only represents you perfectly but takes the punishment you deserve! That really is what Christ did for us in the spiritual realm and we’ll take some time to think that through today on Focal Point. Throughout the study you’ll hear Pastor Mike Fabarez refer to Jesus as our defense lawyer who represents us before the Heavenly Father. The good news is, He’s already won our case. We couldn’t ask for better representation.

If you’re in trouble with the law or have legal problems, you’ll likely call upon a lawyer for representation. However, even the best lawyer is limited in what he or she can do. Today on Focal Point, we again consider the mess we’re in due to our sin, and the one who is able to bail us out. He's a perfect representative if you will! Hebrews 5 is the place to be, as we again look at our need for representation. Pastor Mike Fabarez will have us enter into the law offices of Melchizedek on this Wednesday broadcast, to help us arrive at an understanding of Christ’s qualifications.

We’re back in Hebrews 5 today on Focal Point. We noticed last time why the Old Testament priesthood existed and why it was important. The high priesthood in the Old Testament was designed to give us a sense that God is concerned with us having representation. You and I have a sin problem and because of that we need representation before God. Everything about the priesthood, as we’ll see today, symbolized the solution God had in mind all along.

Pastor Mike Fabarez enters Hebrews 5 today. As we go through the Old Testament, we run across certain priests. You might think of them as the lawyers of Israel that represented the people in matters related to God. Do you ever wonder why they existed, and if or how that applies to us today? Today’s study will really help us with that, so join us as we reconsider the Old Testament Priesthood and our need for representation.

I love the words put to music from Fanny Crosby. "To God be the glory, great things He has done; so loved He the world that He gave us His Son, who yielded His life an atonement for sin, and opened the life gate that all may go in." Indeed, God has done great things. Today on Focal Point, we draw your attention to the greatness of Christ and what He’s done. And by the end of our time together, we’ll see what our response should be to all of this.

When you think of the greatest people who have ever lived, who comes to mind? I suppose some might point to Abraham Lincoln, Ghandi, the Pope, Winston Churchill or Mother Theresa. But none can really compare to Jesus. Without a doubt, He is the greatest, and if you need proof just turn to Hebrews. Today Mike Fabarez is going to take a look back at where we’ve been in our study of Hebrews thus far. The first four chapters are under our belt, and they’ve really emphasized the greatness of Christ.

We’ve all run across parents that give their children whatever they want. It's not hard to see how destructive that can be to the child. I think we can all agree that there are times when a parent should say no and give the child what they need rather than what they want. The same holds true in the Christian life as we’re about to see on Focal Point. God doesn’t always give us what we ask, and for good reason. He has our best interest at heart. Pastor Mike Fabarez takes us to Hebrews four and shows us why we can expect the best kind of help from our heavenly Father. That help may not involve immediate gratification, but it will lead to our good and God’s glory.
