Dealing with Mean and Demanding People, Part 3

May 22, 2014
Jesus said “Love your enemies.”  But that brings up the question … just who, exactly, is our enemy?  Is it the guy who cuts us off on the freeway?  The cranky next-door neighbor?  Could it be that person who’s always getting under our skin?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez puts Jesus’ teaching in its proper context to identify who are our opponents are and how to respond to their opposition pointed against us.

It’s the friend who excludes you from the social circle.  It’s the coworker who always has a sarcastic remark directed right at you.  It’s the boss who passes you up for a promotion.  How are we supposed to deal with mean and demanding people?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez is in Luke, chapter 6.  It’s a well known but often misunderstand passage on responding to our enemies.

Pastor and Bible teacher, Mike Fabarez, is in a verse-by-verse study of the gospel of Luke.  It’s been a fascinating study of the life, ministry and teaching of Jesus that contains needed and practical truth.  On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike comes to a passage in Luke that is quoted often, but misapplied far more.

After a stirring performance, a crowd may rise to its feet with cheers and a standing ovation.  However, when we take a stand for Christ, our audience may not react with such enthusiasm.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez continues our series on Christianity in Real Life.  We’re looking at Jesus’ instructions on Christian living.  And according to Him, speaking up for our faith may not bring us earthly praise.  But it will win us heavenly applause!

The Bible says that God’s words will sound like foolishness to some people. “You can’t actually believe Jesus is only way to be saved,?” they might say.  In our relativistic culture, following Jesus might label you as intolerant, egotistical, or even ignorant!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez offers some comforting words for those singled out because of Christ.  We may face insults or anger because of our faith.  But Jesus told us, “Blessed are you when you’re ridiculed because of me!”

Anarchists.  Arsonists.  Even Cannibals.  Christians have endured false accusations and bitter slander throughout history.  Chances are, if you choose to follow Jesus today, you’ll be on the receiving end of some jokes and insults as well.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez offers some biblical encouragement for those times we’re mocked or scorned for our faith.  Jesus told us, “If you suffer for my sake … you’re blessed!”

Life is not one endless picnic.  But it’s not an unending storm either!  Life is often a series of mountains and valleys.  Times of joy and times of sorrow.  The secret is knowing how to respond to each one.  On this edition of Focal Point, we’ll study Jesus’ insights on the moments that should invoke laughter, and the moments that require tears.  Mike Fabarez is leading us through a practical sermon from Jesus that addresses Christianity in Real Life.

Laughter can be good medicine to a weary heart and troubled mind.  But as healing as laughter can be, it cannot cure every hurt or pain in life.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns to the gospel of Luke, and a timely sermon from Jesus about our emotions.  It’s in these verses that Jesus tells us, “Blessed are those who weep.”  Joy in sorrow?  What did Jesus mean by that?

We’re currently in a series called Christianity in Real Life.  It’s a study on the practical things Jesus taught us about everyday life.  We’ve learned how to view our finances, whether we have a lot or a little.  We’ve heard when to pursue our desires and when to hold back.  On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike examines what Jesus said about the appropriate times for laughter and for grief.

A common mantra we hear is “Do whatever makes you happy!”  We’re told that if you want something … take it!  You have a need?  Why not fulfill it?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explores why Jesus said leaving some desires unsatisfied may actually bring us the most fulfillment.  It’s relevant truth contained in a rather counter-cultural sermon from Christ.  Jesus told us … Blessed are the hungry.

Even in His day, Jesus was rather counter-cultural.  He consistently flipped commonly held values all topsy-turvy.  Fast-forward two thousand years, and His teaching still causes some to scratch their heads.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns to Luke chapter 6, and a relevant sermon from Jesus.  In His message, Jesus offered a series of blessings and warnings that almost seem backward!
