Curiosity and Real Conversions, Part 2

March 20, 2014
When Jesus first uttered the words, “Come follow me!” crowds of people seemed excited to do just that!  But when Jesus explained the responsibilities of being a disciple, many people turned around and went the other way. They may have been interested in Jesus, but they weren’t committed.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez takes a look at the facets of being a disciple of Jesus.

On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez is beginning a brand new miniseries in chapter 5 called Discernment. As we look at His life and ministry, we can see that Jesus often drew large crowds to hear Him speak. Unfortunately, not all those who listened to His words were changed by them. So how do we avoid making the same mistake as we hear from the Lord?

Accomplishing a goal requires persistence.  It’s a determination to sidestep distractions and keep focused.  And if we stay the course, success is within our reach.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez challenges us to have that kind of tenacity as we fulfill our greatest assignment.  As followers of Jesus, we have the privilege of being messengers of the Good News.  But we have to remain diligent!

As sons and daughters of God, we have the privilege of participating in a family business … one that began with a Jewish carpenter over two thousand years ago, who inherited it from His Father.  The work may be challenging, but rewarding as well.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez describes how every follower of Jesus is in the business of bringing the Good News to a waiting world.  It’s a job that deserves our full attention.

By day we might be branch managers, cubicle workers, or stay at home moms.  By night we become husbands, wives, parents, and friends.  But have you ever stopped to think, “What is my true calling in life?”  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez reminds us of our greatest purpose.  It’s a mission Jesus Himself began and asks us to carry on!

All around us are people who are in need of healing, or strength, or guidance.  And as followers of Christ, we have the advantage of pointing those in physical, emotional, or relational need to Jesus.  But is the Savior more than a solution to our temporary problems? On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez presents a better picture of the mission of Jesus.  While it might include healing or guidance, it’s really about saving!

Read through the gospels, and you’ll find Jesus stepping into many different roles.  Sometimes we see Jesus acting as our healer, causing the blind to see and the lame to walk.  Other times we see Jesus as Teacher, delivering powerful messages designed to reach people’s hearts and minds.  But according to Mike Fabarez, as important as these roles were, they were not our Savior’s primary purpose.  On this edition of Focal Point, we’re looking at the chief position of Christ.

Looking upon a sinful and broken world, God could have easily washed His hands of this whole situation, saying,  “You got yourselves into this mess, you can get yourselves out!”  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains how God responded a whole lot differently.  Instead of vengeful anger, God has chosen to react to us with compassion.  This love is displayed in the actions of the Savior, who came to seek and save the lost.

We can learn more from angels than you might expect.  Both heavenly messengers and corrupt demons understand Who is really in charge.  For angels, there’s no question that Jesus holds ultimate authority!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez illustrates the amount of influence Jesus wields.  In the Gospel of Luke, we get a front row seat to an encounter between the Son of God and a servant of Satan.

When you stand in a courtroom, it’s not unusual to feel a sense of awe and humility. As a representative for justice, a judge has the authority to pronounce sentences …and proclaim consequences! On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez highlights an important role of Jesus that can make people feel a little uncomfortable. We can either accept Jesus as Savior or stand before Him as judge!

Remember seeing T-shirts with the phrase, “Jesus is my homeboy”?  It was a slogan that even non-Christians could get onboard with.  Because who wouldn’t want Jesus to be their buddy?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that Jesus is much more than a friend. For those who turn their lives over to His authority, Jesus is our blessed Savior. Yet, those who reject His offer of forgiveness and grace, he takes on a more somber role.
