Christmas and Worldly "Heroes" Part 1

December 15, 2010
Most of us are pretty familiar with the details of the Christmas story. Baby Jesus born in a manger, Shepherds watching over their flock who encounter an angel, wise men bring gifts, and so on. Today we’re going to take a fresh approach to the Christmas story by focusing on one particular person that played one of the more crucial roles in the events surrounding the birth of Christ. We’re not talking about a shepherd or an angel. Rather, we focus on the villian in the story, King Herod.

Have you ever wondered if you can really know for sure you or your loved one’s are saved? The Bible actually tells us that we can know, and it’s by looking for change in our lives. Pastor Mike Fabarez says that there should be three changes in a Christian’s life, and we’ll look in detail at a couple of those today on Focal Point. The first as we saw last time was a change on the inside. We’ll take notice of the other two as we finish up Mike’s Gospel series today, and you might want to find your place in First John as we’ll be there for the most part.

Can you think of a person who claims to be a Christian, and yet there are virtually no good works in their life, and really their life hasn’t changed a bit? Perhaps that even describes where you’re at today? If that’s the case, warning signs should go up. Today on the broadcast we enter part five of our Gospel series, and we turn our attention to good works. Now as we’ll see, it’s important that we get this all straight, so please pay close attention to what Mike has to say from God’s Word. When a person is genuinely saved their life changes inside and out.

Repentance has almost become a forgotten word in the modern day church, but it is very much a part of the Gospel message. Last time on Focal Point, Pastor Mike Fabarez stressed that repentance and faith are both a work of God, and not something we can drum up on our own. And with that as a backdrop, we’ll spend some time today discussing what repentance is all about. Then we’ll transition to the other component of our response to the Gospel, and that’s faith. We hear that term tossed around quite a bit these days, but do we understand what biblical faith is? Here now to encourage us to rely on Christ and nothing else for forgiveness, is Pastor Mike once again.

We’ve spent some considerable amount of time here recently on Focal Point discussing what the Gospel is, and what Christ has accomplished on our behalf. But how do we respond to the Good News? That’s the question we’ll entertain today. Salvation is by grace, through faith and repentance. Both of those components are absolutely necessary. Pastor Mike Fabarez will show us why it’s important to understand that even repentance and faith comes from God. From beginning to end, salvation is a work of God, and not ourselves. As we go through the study, this would be a good time to reflect on our own lives and ask ourselves if we’re holding to the authentic Gospel.

Whether you realize it or not, we all have a problem, which we can’t fix on our own. It’s called sin! And our sin separates us from a holy God. So then how is the problem fixed? Today on Focal Point, we again focus on the central figure of the Gospel... the Lamb of God. Pastor Mike Fabarez continues his Gospel series by underscoring who Jesus is, and then leads us to why He is so important to the Gospel.

If I was to ask you what you think it takes to get right with God, how would you answer? How we answer that is critically important, and there is no margin for error. With scores of people being deceived into thinking they’re o.k. when they really aren’t, it becomes very necessary to get out the real, unadulterated Gospel message. And that’s what we’re in the process of doing on Focal Point. As we begin part three of Mike Fabarez’ Gospel series today, we’re going to take some time to recall our dilemma. After Pastor Mike summarizes the problem we all have, we’ll go on to see God’s loving solution.

Have you ever read or heard something out of the proper context, and so you arrived at the wrong conclusion? Many people do that with the Gospel, as they don’t really understand its context. That can lead to real problems. Today on Focal Point, Pastor Mike Fabarez returns to his series on the Gospel, and continues to point us to the character of God. We saw last time that God is our creator and so we are accountable to Him. Now we must acknowledge that God is holy and requires holiness of us. Not only that, He’s just and loving too. That’s the important prelude to the Gospel that we’ve got to come to grips with, even before we talk about the Gospel.
December 6, 2010
Many of us live in communities where there’s practically a church on every corner. But unfortunately, not all are proclaiming the same God, and even fewer are really straight on how to get right with God. This current study will really serve as a foundation for understanding the Gospel message.
December 3, 2010
Most, if not all of us, strive to avoid strained relationships. We want to get along with people, and avoid offending people if we can, right? But the Gospel message will be offensive to some, and as we present it, we can count on offending people. Doing that may even lead to a strained relationship too! Unfortunately, all too many Christians tweak God’s message to avoid upsetting others, and that is a huge mistake. As we learned last time we can’t be kind of right about the Gospel, we have to get it completely right. And the way to get it straight is to go to God’s Word. That’s what we’re about to do.

As we begin a new month, we bring you a new series. Today, pastor Mike Fabarez begins an important five part study on the Gospel. First, he’ll explain why it’s so important to be absolutely right about the Gospel message. There is much confusion today regarding what God expects of us, and how to get right with Him. This new series will help clear up the confusion that may be present in some of our minds, and help us avoid the mistake of tinkering with God’s message.
