Call for Help Part 2

March 9, 2011
We’ve all run across parents that give their children whatever they want. It's not hard to see how destructive that can be to the child. I think we can all agree that there are times when a parent should say no and give the child what they need rather than what they want. The same holds true in the Christian life as we’re about to see on Focal Point. God doesn’t always give us what we ask, and for good reason. He has our best interest at heart. Pastor Mike Fabarez takes us to Hebrews four and shows us why we can expect the best kind of help from our heavenly Father. That help may not involve immediate gratification, but it will lead to our good and God’s glory.

Many of us have several Bibles at home, but sadly about the only time we open it is at church on Sunday. If you’re like most Christians and have a lackluster devotional time with the Lord, you’ll definitely want to join us for today's Focal Point. Mike Fabarez will show us the enormous benefits of having a regular time in God’s Word. As we open Hebrews 4 together, we’re going to observe three fantastic ways to approach God’s Word.

Pastor Mike Fabarez is in a study of Hebrews right now, and today we’re reminded of just how important God’s Word is to our lives. It is said that when the famous missionary, Dr. David Livingstone, started his trek across Africa, he had 73 books in 3 packs. After the party had gone 300 miles, Livingstone was obliged to throw away some of the books because of the fatigue of those carrying his baggage. As he continued on his journey, his library grew less and less, until he had but one book left—his Bible. Livingston knew how important God’s Word was to Him, and let’s be encouraged to get to that place ourselves.

We’re back in Hebrews today with Pastor Mike Fabarez. And today, we set out to  verify the reality of our faith, as we wrap up our series, “Am I Really a Christian?” Maybe there’s some lingering doubts in your mind as to where you’re at with God, or perhaps you really have no idea? We’d do well to check to see if what we have is real or not.

Last time on Focal Point you may recall that we spent a good portion of our time discussing how we get in and stay in the family of God. It’s all by grace through faith, and not of ourselves. With that said, does that mean that we can go on living in sin once we’re saved? How do we really know for sure that we’re a Christian? Pastor Mike Fabarez has noticed three things that verify the reality of our faith, and you’ll find them in Hebrews four.

You have a good number of people today who are trying to earn their way into heaven. We learned last time on Focal Point that’s impossible to do, because the pricetag is too expensive. That would necessitate perfection on our part. There’s another large group of people who think once they get into the family of God, they can be kicked out due to bad behavior. Mike Fabarez wonders, "If we’re not good enough to get into the family of God, what makes us think we can be good enough to stay in?" We’ll consider that question today on Focal Point.

If asked if you are you going to heaven when you die, what would you say? A few days before his death, Dr. F. B. Meyer wrote a very dear friend these words: “I have just heard, to my great surprise, that I have but a few days to live. It may be that before this reaches you, I shall have entered the palace. Don’t trouble to write. We shall meet in the morning.” Do you share that confidence friend? We can be absolutely sure that we’re on our way to heaven, and we’ll explain why today on Focal Point.

Is it o.k. to work on Sunday? Do I have to eat fish on Friday? Am I to stay away from bacon? As you may know, tons of books have come out suggesting that the dietary laws of the Old Testament are applicable today, and others tell us we’re disobeying God if we don’t worship on the right day of the week. Let’s explore Scripture for answers to these questions today on Focal Point. Mike Fabarez draws out the difference today between God’s moral law and His ceremonial law.

Quite a bit is said in Christian circles these days about what to and not to eat, as well as what day we are to worship God on. While there are Scriptures that say we can’t please God unless we keep the Sabbath, and the Old Testament is full of ceremonial laws, is all of this something for 21st century believers? Let’s talk about that today on Focal Point.

Have you ever stopped to think about how long eternity is? Mind boggling, isn’t it! The Bible clearly teaches that each of us will spend eternity in one of two places... heaven or hell! Which will it be for you? The stakes are high which makes it vitally important that we objectively evaluate where we’re at. So let’s do that now, as we join Pastor Mike in Hebrews 4.
