The Harsh But Good News

Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news.  Which would you like to hear first?  Before you answer, listen to Mike Fabarez on this edition of Focal Point, as he explains how we cannot appreciate truly good news … without hearing the bad news as well.  It’s a lesson we learn from John the Baptist in Luke, Chapter 3.  Once we understand the uncomfortable truth about sin, we can fully grasp and embrace the concept of grace!

The Harsh But Good NewsJohn wore camel hair.  We wear denim and cotton.  John lived out in the desert.  Many of us reside in the suburbs.  Though there are many differences between John the Baptist and ourselves, our ministries are very similar!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez details the message that John the Baptist shared in his generation, so that we can take over where he left off and continue to spread that challenging, but loving, message of the gospel!

The Harsh But Good NewsThere’s a multitude of voices in our world today, each clamoring for our attention and claiming to have authority.  But Jesus told us that His sheep know Him and listen to Him.  So how do we pick out God’s voice from among the cacophony of the crowd?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez offers a practical study on tuning our ear to God’s Words, whether they are coming from Scripture or from a friend!

The Harsh But Good NewsRepentance.  It’s not a word we often hear.  Maybe because it makes us feel uncomfortable.  We hear “repent” and we squirm in our seats, or try and change the subject.  It’s definitely not a feel-good word!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains how the uneasy topic of repentance goes hand-in-hand with the good news of forgiveness.

Priorities in TensionBreak out your priority list for just a second.  Who is at the top?  Spouse?  Kids? Career?  All of them legitimate contenders for our attention.  But should any one of these candidates become the primary focus of our lives, well, everything gets out of order!  We previously began looking at what a certain junior higher said should be the very center of our lives.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez picks up where we left off in the message, Learning From the Perfect 12-Year-Old

Priorities in Tension Parents are supposed to train and instruct their kids.  But what happens when the roles reverse and the child starts teaching mom and dad?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez looks at a defining moment in the life of Jesus and His parents.  No doubt, Mary and Joseph were shocked to hear what was coming out of the mouth of their junior-higher!  And there is a lesson for us in there as well.

Priorities in TensionYour junior-higher could likely teach you a lot about the latest technology, trends in today’s fashion, or the latest blockbuster movie.  But not many of us would seek out a pre-teen in order to receive life-changing wisdom!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez says there is one, special middle-schooler who has a lot to wisdom to share!  While kids His age were still learning from pastors and parents, Jesus was teaching the teachers!

Simeon on the Polarizing Effects of JesusAs His followers, there’s a strong possibility that whatever thoughts, opinion and reactions people have towards Jesus, well, they’ll have those same responses towards us!  Align yourself with Christ, and there’s bound to be some controversy!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez is studying the gospel of Luke, looking at the polarizing effects of Jesus.  As Christians, we shouldn’t be surprised when opposition comes our way.  But don’t worry, there’s some encouragement in that as well!

Simeon on the Polarizing Effects of JesusAsk ten people, “Who is Jesus?” and you’ll likely receive ten different answers.  There’s still disagreement about who this carpenter was … and is!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns our attention to a vivid description of the person and purpose of Jesus, from the lips of a wise, old prophet.

Simeon on the Polarizing Effects of Jesus Jesus is a polarizing figure in our world today.  Some people love and revere Him as Savior, Messiah, and King.  But others view Christ as a delusional prophet or a misinformed martyr.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that the controversy surrounding Christ is nothing new.  From the day He was born, Jesus challenged people’s perceptions.  We’ll look at what an old priest had to say about this unique child today.

Over the past few days, we’ve been remembering and celebrating the moment when Jesus Christ came into the world.  And it’s been eye-opening.  Because as we study the first coming of Christ, we see that Jesus’ purpose wasn’t to make things right in the world.  He came to make people right with God.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains that this is the true Crux of Christmas.
