Pastor Mike Fabarez

Apostasy and Stumbling Saints, Part 3

April 28, 2014
Currently, Mike Fabarez is in a study through the gospel of Luke.  We’ve looked at the beginnings of Jesus’ earthly ministry … and the growing opposition He faced.  As His message spread, Jesus handpicked a select group to carry the gospel even further.  But within those twelve disciples were doubters, cowards, and even back-stabbers.  Why would Jesus choose these men at all?  On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike explains why Jesus chose us as well!

One was an IRS agent.  A few worked on the family boat.  One guy was political activist.  The Apostles didn’t have much in common, except that they were the least likely people to change the world.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns to the gospel of Luke to study why Jesus chose this motley group of men.  Perhaps we should also ask ourselves; if God can use these guys, could He use you and me as well?

In the Gospel of John, we’re introduced to a woman who isn’t unlike people we’d meet today.  She had a string of failed relationships, looking for love in all the wrong places.  She was hopelessly tangled up in her own sin.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez describes the transformative encounter between the Samaritan woman and Jesus.  With truth, grace and dignity, Jesus offers this woman the most liberating message in the world.

Long ago, at an ancient well just outside a dusty old town, a conversation took place that would change a person’s life forever.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez takes us back to that divine meeting and a transforming encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman.  As she made her way to the well that day, I’m sure this lady never thought she would experience a drink of Living Water!

The French philosopher Pascal wrote, “there is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every person, which cannot be filled by any created thing.”  Yet how many people try to fill their inner emptiness with everything other then what they truly need?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez studies a profound conversation between Jesus and a woman at a well.  It shows us exactly what can fill that God-shaped void!

For almost thirty years, the Berlin Wall divided the capital of Germany. People on the west side couldn’t connect with people from the east side. The blockade was an imposing barrier until the day the American President struck a blow for freedom by saying, “Tear down this wall!”   On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez reminds us that there was once a divider between us and God.  But on a fateful Friday afternoon, Jesus tore it down.

The gospels describe how at the moment that Jesus breathed His last breath upon the cross, the sky turned black, the ground shook, and miles away in the temple, a curtain was torn in two. To understand the significance of that event, it’s helpful to see why this barrier was erected in the first place. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez provides some historical and biblical background on The Torn Curtain.

For all His thirty-three years, Jesus lived a faultless life.  Yet there were people who thought Jesus was doing it all wrong!  According to these religious leaders, Jesus was a blatant law-breaker!  But how could they think that about the perfect Son of God?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez identifies the problem; they couldn’t tell God’s timeless principles from their own rigid expectations!  So how do we avoid making the same mistake?

We want to please God.  We want to do what is right and stay away from what’s wrong.  But sometimes in our zeal to follow God’s commandments, we can mix in our own rules.  Pretty soon, we’re not able to tell the difference between what God said, and what we made up! On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez turns to the ultimate authority on distinguishing between the two.

In His preaching, Jesus usually saved His harshest criticism for religious leaders who combined God’s perfect law with their own rigid customs and traditions.  And in order to avoid the same mistake, we need to understand which rules are God-given…and which are man-made!  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez says the only way to distinguish between Traditions & Authentic Rules is to use spiritual discernment.
