Am I Really a Christian? Part 3a

February 28, 2011
If asked if you are you going to heaven when you die, what would you say? A few days before his death, Dr. F. B. Meyer wrote a very dear friend these words: “I have just heard, to my great surprise, that I have but a few days to live. It may be that before this reaches you, I shall have entered the palace. Don’t trouble to write. We shall meet in the morning.” Do you share that confidence friend? We can be absolutely sure that we’re on our way to heaven, and we’ll explain why today on Focal Point

Is it o.k. to work on Sunday? Do I have to eat fish on Friday? Am I to stay away from bacon? As you may know, tons of books have come out suggesting that the dietary laws of the Old Testament are applicable today, and others tell us we’re disobeying God if we don’t worship on the right day of the week. Let’s explore Scripture for answers to these questions today on Focal Point. Mike Fabarez draws out the difference today between God’s moral law and His ceremonial law.

Quite a bit is said in Christian circles these days about what to and not to eat, as well as what day we are to worship God on. While there are Scriptures that say we can’t please God unless we keep the Sabbath, and the Old Testament is full of ceremonial laws, is all of this something for 21st century believers? Let’s talk about that today on Focal Point.

Have you ever stopped to think about how long eternity is? Mind boggling, isn’t it! The Bible clearly teaches that each of us will spend eternity in one of two places... heaven or hell! Which will it be for you? The stakes are high which makes it vitally important that we objectively evaluate where we’re at. So let’s do that now, as we join Pastor Mike in Hebrews 4.

Hell... while you’re not likely to hear it preached from the majority of pulpits across America today, it was the focus of the preaching of Christ. It’s described with the imagery of eternal fire, outer darkness, being lost, perishing, and the like. Clearly it is horrible and is to be avoided at all costs, so today we begin a series that will help us determine if we’re really a Christian and on our way to heaven!

Do you know of someone who once walked an aisle, prayed a prayer, went to church for a while, but now denies Christ through their words and actions? What are we to make of this? Were they really a Christian? One of the big questions that really has existed for quite some time in the church is, “Can you lose your salvation?” This question really hits close to home when you’re talking about a family member or friend that once prayed a prayer but isn’t walking with the Lord now. Pastor Mike will take us to a few key spots in Scripture to help us understand why real Christians endure to the end.

Recently we’ve been talking a great deal about faithfulness to God. First Pastor Mike Fabarez addressed our own faithfulness to Christ, and then last time, he showed us how we can be of some help to others with their obedience to the Lord. Today as our series, “Faithful to God,” continues we address something that is greatly discussed and debated within the church: Is our salvation contingent upon whether or not we are faithful? Let’s find our place in Hebrews three, and find out together.

We can probably all think of someone we know that is living in sin right now, but are we doing anything to help them? One of our goals as Christians is to be faithful to Christ, but every so often someone will wander off the path a bit. With individualism at its peak in our society, the church is to stand apart and reach out to help the sinner get back in line. There’s a lot at stake! Today on Focal Point, Pastor Mike will encourage us to help others obey God as our series, “Faithful to God,” continues.

In an age where we’re told its every man for himself, and don’t involve yourself in the affairs of others, God calls us to a much different pattern of living. Developing a corporate identity and responsibility, that’s what we’re after today on Focal Point. Today we return to Mike’s series, “Faithful to God,” which is really designed to help us understand our call to faithfulness. But as we’re about to discover, being faithful takes a team effort.

If you received a letter from someone that contained mostly correction and some pockets of encouragement, and then it was signed I love you and want God’s favor to be on you... how would you receive that? I think it's safe to say, many would be offended and maybe even upset. But what I just described, in a nutshell, is Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. And today on Focal Point, we’ll see that biblical love speaks the truth, and that truth may involve something people don’t want to hear. Pastor Mike Fabarez is also quick to point out, we can’t lose sight of godly compassion through all of this. Right on the heals of Valentine’s Day, our attention is given to what the Bible has to say about real love.
February 15, 2011
Love... it’s on the cards and balloons we give out on a day like this. We even say, “I love you,” quite frequently. But what is love? Ask that question to ten different people, and you’re liable to get ten different answers. Generally, the world defines it in terms of feelings, being nice and non-offensive. Today, we’ll see that biblical love aims at the person’s good, and that may not always be convenient, feel good, or even be well received.  We thought it would be fitting on a day like this for you to consider who’s on your love list, and then be encouraged to promote good in their life. Whether that’s your spouse, parents, children, friend or neighbor.
