A Crash Course in Repentance and Faith, Part 2

November 24, 2014
If you were to sum up the Christian faith in a few words, what would they be?  Well, Scripture offers two foundational words for our belief—Repentance and faith.  Sounds simple, right?  Well, actually, there are quite a few myths about what these words mean.  Maybe you’ve heard a few yourself.  Last time we looked at some misunderstandings about repentance.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez points out a few myths about faith.

Could you imagine kindergarteners learning calculus?  Or first graders reading Plato?  Of course not!  You can only tackle advanced topics when you’ve mastered the basics first.  And the same holds true for our faith.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez explains the basics we need to grasp before we progress further in our walk with Christ.  These fundamentals of the faith are what the writer of Hebrews describes in chapter 6.

As we get older, our bodies start to change.  Middles get rounder and muscles get softer.  So a healthy diet and regular exercise become essential.  Of course, we don’t want to make you feel guilty for eating an extra slice of cake or skipping the gym once in a while. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez encourages us towards a better spiritual diet and exercise.  Because the condition of our faith is far more important condition of our bodies.

After 25 years, Sam was still doing the same job at the same salary.  Finally, he went to his boss to say he felt neglected. “Look, I’ve had a quarter of a century of experience,” he said. “No Sam,” sighed the boss, “you’ve had one experience for a quarter of a century.”  Unfortunately, many Christians operate in the same way.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez asks us to consider our development … not in our career, but in our faith.

Turn to the yellow pages, and you’ll easily find a specific lawyer for any specific legal issue.  There are malpractice lawyers, divorce attorneys, and public defenders.  But what about a lawyer specializing in spiritual cases?  Who can represent our case before God?  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez points out the spiritual counsel that’s available to everyone who asks.  And we certainly need representation!

In the beginning was nothing … or in the beginning there was a Creator?  It’s a question that’s discussed not only in schools and universities, but among friends and family too!  So on this edition of Ask Pastor Mike, we’ll join Executive Director Jay Wertin and Mike Fabarez for a conversation inside the pastor’s study on the question of creation versus evolution.

In a court case, each lawyer has time to make a closing argument. The prosecuting attorney will detail all the reasons why the defendant is guilty. But then the defense attorney can explain why his client should go free. On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez reminds us of the mounting evidence that proves our guilt before God.  But with Jesus as our defense lawyer and Advocate, our case is already won.

If you’re in legal trouble, you’ll likely hire a lawyer to represent you in court. But even the best lawyer is limited in what he or she can do.  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez describes our need for spiritual representation before God. To do so, we turn to Hebrews, chapter 5, and enter the law offices of Melchizedek. And the job of human representatives like Melchizedek is to refer us to the perfect Advocate … Jesus Christ.

Let’s face it, we’re all guilty of breaking God’s perfect law. There’s not one person who could plead innocence in God’s court. So obvious is our guilty verdict, we’d be hard-pressed to find a lawyer willing to help us. Thankfully, God has already provided us with spiritual representation. On this edition of Focal Point, Pastor Mike is in Hebrews chapter 5. We’ll see how everything about the Old Testament priests symbolized the salvation Jesus would ultimately give us.
November 11, 2014
We’ve reached chapter 5 in our verse-by-verse study of the book of Hebrews. This section of Scripture is all about the role of Old Testament priests. Consider them like the lawyers of Israel … representing the people in God’s courtroom. But you may wonder how the ancient priesthood applies to us today. Well, that’s what this study is all about.
