A Closer Relationship with God Part 1a

May 12, 2011
Before we can have a closer relationship to God, we’ve got to make sure we have a relationship to start with! Today’s program will help us determine where we’re at spiritually. Turn to Hebrews ten, verse nineteen, as Pastor Mike points the way to a "Closer Relationship with God."

"I have a new word for you from the Lord!" How often have we heard that line? As we’ll see in a moment, God actually told us we can expect this to happen in the last days. But do we need a new revelation or a new version of Christ? Keep that question in mind and join us for Focal Point as our series, “Christ Changed Everything,” concludes.

Every once in a while we’ll have someone knock on our door and offer us some reading material. At first glance it may appear to compliment the Gospel as we know it, but open it up, and it attacks the message of grace. Maybe they’re offering a “newer” testament than what we have in our Bibles, or perhaps another testament altogether! Today’s broadcast is really going to help us understand why we shouldn’t be looking for a newer, better, or different testament than what we have in the Word. And in this age where the message of grace is being attacked in great measure, this is a very timely study.

Have you noticed that God is big on pictures, parables or illustrations? One example of that, among many, would be all of those animal sacrifices we find in Old Testament times. It was a picture of Christ who would later come to give His own blood, and solve our sin problem through substitution. Let’s see together how we should respond to this as we join Mike Fabarez in Hebrews on Focal Point.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “No man is poor who has had a godly mother.” Charles Spurgeon was heard to say, “I cannot tell how much I owe to the prayers of my good mother.” Today we have some encouragement to share with mothers from the Scriptures. Not only will Mike Fabarez express God’s wisdom for mothers, but we’ll see how we should love them too.

There are those that love to point to the killing of animals in the Bible and conclude that Christians and God are cruel. Maybe you’ve wondered yourself, “Why did they sacrifice animals back in Old Testament times?” We’ll discover in a moment it was an important reminder of sin and an experience of substitution. Which brings up another question: why don’t we do this anymore? We’ll seek to answer that and other tough questions today on Focal Point as Pastor Mike Fabarez resumes his series, “Christ Changed Everything.”

Do you ever find the Old Testament difficult to understand and even harder to apply? You’re certainly not alone if that’s the case. Today’s Focal Point will really help us with that. What are we to make of all the ceremonies and rules that we find in the left side of our Bibles? Does that apply to us, and if so, how? Mike Fabarez encourages us to grab the reality and leave the ceremonies behind.

If you’ve read through the Old Testament, you know that it’s full of ceremonies and laws, some of which may even sound bizarre to us! We learned last time on Focal Point that the New Covenant now replaces the old. But does that mean we just throw out the Old Testament, or pick and choose what applies to us? Let’s look into this today with Mike Fabarez. Mike will encourage us to be very careful how we apply the Old Testament.

Live life to the fullest! You've no doubt heard that line! It’s generally linked to self-gratifying and self-centered motives and actions. Today on Focal Point, we’ll learn how to live life to the fullest under the New Covenant. This has everything to do with living for Christ from the inside-out, diving deeper into knowing God, and cherishing His forgiveness.

We’ll begin part three of Mike Fabarez’ series,”Christ Changed Everything,” today on the broadcast. Mike will have us consider some aspects of the New Covenant and show us why it’s so much superior to the Old Covenant. Those that try to live under the Old Covenant rules quickly discover it can’t be done. It can’t fix our problem, because we’re sinful people. So where does that leave us? Christ changed everything and solved the problem!

Ask most people where God dwells and they would probably say - heaven. We also know that one of God’s characteristics is that He is omnipresent. But even more staggering is the truth that Pastor Mike Fabarez will unwrap today - that the Christian is God’s Dwelling place. Now that’s amazing! It’s important to understand that there really are no temples in the new covenant age, because we are God’s temple.
