Jesus on Relationships
Sunday, June 28, 2009
We were wired to live in relationships - family, friends, co-workers, community. While the beauty and benefits of relationships done right are rewarding, the pain of fractured relationships can be devastating. Jesus teaches us the value of healthy relationships and the steps necessary to get there. It may be painful but it’s always healthy.

It’s so easy to worry and become negative. Whether it’s reading the newspaper, watching the news, or just listening to a conversation, the weight of worry can overcome us. Yet Jesus has a lot to say about worry. It’s His words that tell us the worry is absolutely worthless.

They captured it and they kept it! The early church experienced the presence of the Spirit of God but, more importantly, they kept His presence. You were not designed to live a flat, shallow, stale life. God designed you to live engaged and growing in your walk with Him. Avoiding the big traps can keep you going and growing in Him.

In our present culture we frequently ask the question, "what is the least amount of work that I can do to achieve the maximum results?" We often find this attitude played out in our occupations, our exercise routines, and our spiritual life. Going the extra mile has become so foreign to our culture. So how did the early church arrive at such a deep level of commitment to growing in community with God and each other?

Series: 242 - Breaking the Code
We've broken the code and discovered the key ingredients to the authentic church in Acts 2:42 - devotion, the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer. If this is what we're striving toward, do we have it? If we don't have it, how do we get it? If we do have it, how do we share it?

Few subjects illicit more guilt than that of prayer. It's rare to find a person that spends too much time praying. More than just a habit or a ritual performed in a perfunctory manner, prayer is our lifeline -- it's our breathing, our heat beat. Prayerlessness leads to self-effort which, at some point, will produce failure. Prayer, instead, unleashes the power and direction of God in our lives.

The early church, the first converts, had a pure, unrefined faith. There was something about them that was attractive. Their attitude, compassion, focus and zeal was contagious. Yet what they had is still possible for us to have. Yes, it's a different day, but the Holy Spirit that filled them can fill us today.

Have you ever tried to figure out that elusive it? It is an intangible attitude that sets apart a person or organization from the pack. While there were lots of great activities that emerged from the first believers, there was one all-encompassing attitude that dominated them. Understanding and recapturing fellowship can take us to a new life of effectiveness, fulfillment and joy. Pastor's name: Dave Engbrecht

Imitations and poor replicas won't cut it when it comes to pure faith. When the Spirit of God moves there's a desire for the real thing, not just stories of the real thing.
The 'first cut' of followers of Christ were marked by specific activities. They weren't going through the motions but allowing the Holy Spirit to shape, form and mold them. Those activities were more than rote exercises but life activities crucial for their spiritual formation. Pastor's name: Dave Engbrecht

It's common that over time things have a way of changing, morphing and even mutating. Often replicas, over time, bear little resemblance to the original. The changes are so subtle that they can go unnoticed. So, can that happen with faith? How much like the early believers am I? What, over time, has changed? Is my version of faith close to the original or is it a westernized, Americanized, marginalized version?

Love can have hundreds of definitions. It means different things to different people. While there are multiple thousands of examples of love, above all a single illustration, one moment in time, captured in a single picture defines love.

What picture would best describe where you're at in life right now?
Would it be a picture of a Hawaiian beach or the Bad Lands of South Dakota? Would it be a quiet gentle mountain stream or would it be the raging rapids in the Rockies? While everyone wants to live in the Garden of Eden, there is lots of time spent in the deserts of life. That being the case, Wilderness Survival 101 is required.
