Once infatuated, or in the weird zone as he calls it, it's hard to judge a person's character accurately. Chun advises singles to take their time to really get to know their boyfriend or girlfriend. Preparing properly for marriage, Chun reminds, will increase your chance of success in marriage.

Why do I care so much about me?  If we were honest, most of us would love to be great in a kingdom of our own making, says biblical counselor Ed Welch. Christ, however, has a better idea. Jesus experienced rejection continually, but that didn't keep him from loving and serving others. If we are to follow Christ's example then, we must learn to love other people more than we want to be loved by them.

God knows and loves you. But do you know Him? Christian counselor Ed Welch believes most of us care too much about what others think of us. While we're all affected by the disapproval of others, we don't need to be owned by it. When others are ruling us, they become the center of our lives, which eventually leads us to idolatry. The only real solution for taking down idols, Welch says, is to know and love the one true God.

Our desire to be loved runs deep. Biblical counselor Ed Welch explains that our desire for love isn't evil, but that in some instances we want it too much; so much so, in fact, that we can be controlled by what others think. During adolescence we call this peer pressure, but we all struggle with it throughout our lives. Welch explains that we're either going to trust God and what He says about us, or we're going to trust in other people and seek out the approval and protection they can give.

Exposed to illicit images when he was young, Shuler tells how he tried to shake off the habit, especially during his seminary studies and the ministry that followed. Is dating that beneficial? According to pastors Gerald Hiestand and Jay Thomas, not really. For Hiestand and Thomas, the activity of going on a date isn't a problem, but too many people use the dating relationship to justify their sexual activity, as if "being in a relationship" makes promiscuity okay. Instead of dating, they encourage singles to establish dating friendships, getting to know someone gradually over time, and then making their intentions of marriage known before beginning to date exclusively.

About Dave and Ann Wilson

Dave and Ann Wilson are co-hosts of FamilyLife Today©, FamilyLife’s nationally-syndicated radio program.

Dave and Ann have been married for more than 40 years and have spent the last 35 teaching and mentoring couples and parents across the country. They have been featured speakers at FamilyLife’s Weekend to Remember® since 1993, and have also hosted their own marriage conferences across the country.

Dave and Ann helped plant Kensington Community Church in Detroit, Michigan where they served together in ministry for more than three decades, wrapping up their time at Kensington in 2020.

The Wilsons are the creative force behind DVD teaching series Rock Your Marriage and The Survival Guide To Parenting, as well as authors of the recently released books Vertical Marriage (Zondervan, 2019) and No Perfect Parents (Zondervan, 2021).

Dave is a graduate of the International School of Theology, where he received a Master of Divinity degree. A Ball State University Hall of Fame Quarterback, Dave served the Detroit Lions as Chaplain for thirty-three years. Ann attended the University of Kentucky. She has been active with Dave in ministry as a speaker, writer, small group leader, and mentor to countless women.

The Wilsons live in the Detroit area. They have three grown sons, CJ, Austin, and Cody, three daughters-in-law, and a growing number of grandchildren.
