In fact, Stanton, who's done extensive research on this topic, tells why cohabitation almost guarantees divorce due to lack of commitment and relational ambiguity. Stanton goes on to explain why cohabitation is a relationship on a man's terms while marriage is a relationship on a woman's terms.
