Surrendering Control

November 6, 2013
In what ways are you controlling your husband and kids? Karen Ehman and Nicole Unice, controlling over-comers, talk about the very real temptation to control your kids so they’ll live happy lives and stay on a good path.  However, Karen and Nicole remind us that parenting is all about training your children to make wise choices and eventually working yourself out of a job. Hear these former control freaks tell where they’ve been challenged to “let go” and not control their husbands.

At home, who gets their way most of the time? Is it you? Author Karen Ehman, a self-professed controller, talks about her courtship with “Foxy Todd” and the inevitable nuptials that followed.  Things went well, she says, as long as they did things her way, but she realized it wasn’t a true partnership. Nicole Unice also chimes in on the issue, sharing how tempting it is to tell her husband how to drive or where to park, but has learned to defer to her husband’s wisdom and respect him as the man he is.

Do you always feel the need to be in control?  Recovering controllers Nicole Unice and Karen Ehman believe that the root of control is fear or pride. We either just “want what we want when we want it” or we are so afraid we won’t be safe or significant if we don’t control the outcome of our circumstances.  Women are great multi-taskers, Karen admits, but that ability to take care of many things at once can also leave them frazzled. Husbands can help their wives put life in context and encourage them to be okay with less than perfect.

Evangelism sounds so hard. But it doesn’t have to be. Amy Lively, creator of The Neighborhood Café,  encourages listeners to love their neighbors in a whole new way by inviting them into their homes.  Amy recalls the season when God broke her heart for her neighbors and prompted her to start a neighborhood bible study. Resisting at first, she eventually gave in, and what transpired  was life-changing. It is possible, Amy assures us, to love your neighbors without being weird, and today Amy tells you how.

Do you know your neighbors?  Research shows that a majority of us don’t. Amy Lively, the creator of The Neighborhood Café, remembers what it was like the first time she knocked on doors to invite her neighbors over. But that little step of faith, and the relationships she developed, made her initial nervousness worth it. Amy shares how anyone can easily reach out with the love of Christ to their neighbors, and perhaps change their neighborhood for good.

Jesus spoke in parables, and a great way to teach children is through stories as well. Barbara Rainey joins her husband Dennis to talk about her new resource, “Written and  Remembered,” a book consisting of four true stories designed to teach children of all ages the beauty of gratitude. The Rainey’s daughter, Ashley Rainey Escue, a mother of five boys herself, joins the couple by phone to tell of the fun her kids had reading the stories and doing the challenges at the end of each chapter.

Is the conversation around your Thanksgiving table becoming a little stale? Barbara Rainey encourages families to “dig a little deeper” in the conversation well by asking questions designed to help guests think thoughtfully about all their blessings.  To make dinner conversation more engaging, Barbara has designed a unique resource called, “Untie Your Story,” which includes a muslin ribbon with  12-thought provoking questions on it that can be cut and tied around a napkin to be shared with guests during mealtime.  As guests take turns answering their question, each will have a chance to share a little bit about their story and to connect with others in a deeper way.

Does faith encourage art, or does art encourage faith? Barbara Rainey recalls the moment in her mothering when she realized that her children must be her priority and her art, specifically her water coloring, must be set aside for a season.  But as her children grew and left the nest, Barbara tells how she once again picked up her brush and starting honing her skills through art classes. Her renewed interest had her wondering how she might use her artistic bent for a creative use, and “Ever Thine Home” products and resources were born.
