In 1934 a group of World War I veterans returned from battle and erected a simple wooden cross in the middle of California’s Mojave Desert—a fitting tribute to their comrades who had fought and died for America. But because of one objector, the cross was removed and 70 years of history were erased. The Supreme Court ruled in April that the cross could stay, but it was stolen by vandals one month later.
