“Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love Me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of Myself, but He sent Me” (John 8:42).
The Jews to whom Jesus was speaking had a false sense of security. They felt all was well with them because they were of Abraham’s seed. But Jesus points out the emptiness of their claim.
First He said, My word has no place in you. They were rejecting the teaching of Jesus, but those who are changed by grace receive it.
Next He says, You are not doing the works of Abraham. Abraham was a man who believed God and obeyed God, but they did not.
Finally He says, You do not love Me. There is widespread thinking today that it really doesn’t matter whether you love and believe in Jesus. But Jesus says, “If God were your Father, ye would love Me.”
What about you? Do you love Jesus? If you do, you can give thanks for His grace since you love Him because He first loved you.
