Exodus 36:8-38Mark 3:20-35

Thought from Today's Old Testament Passage:

He made the laver of bronze and its base of bronze, from the bronze mirrors of the serving women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Exodus 38:8

The symbolic meaning of this laver is indeed significant and precious. It provided for a type of cleansing which served to maintain fitness for a spiritual ministry. The priests' guilt because of sin was dealt with at the altar of sacrifice, yet something else was required for effective fellowship and worship in the tabernacle. This had to do with the defilement of sin, that effect of sin which the blood did not remove. Before one could enter the presence of a holy God this had to be cared for. It followed the sacrifice at the altar and was based upon the merit of it but was a definite separate act. So it is with the believer in Christ today. He is freed from the guilt of sin and its penalty by the application of the blood (Rom. 5:9), yet there remains defilement of sin that comes through daily living. This is cared for by continuous washing of the water which is the Word of God (Eph. 5:25-26; John 15:3). The Holy Spirit also plays a significant role in the application of that Word of God thus producing a cleansing effect (I Cor. 6:11). There is a sanctification which is complete and final through the blood of Christ, but there is also a sanctification which is continuous and practical. It paves the way for continued effective fellowship with God. It helps a man to purge himself" (II Tim. 2:21; cf. I Cor. 5:7).
