The perfect part
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Genesis 2:21 (NKJV)
Just about all of us are familiar with this story. God determines that man needs a helper, a companion, a wife. And so He causes a great sleep to come over him, removes one of his ribs, and creates the woman out of it.
Again, we're fairly familiar with this, but how many of us have stopped and asked "Why?" Of all the ways God could have created the woman, why use the man's rib? Why not make her out of dirt or something else that was around?
When you think about it, the rib was the perfect part for God to use, because it paints such a poetic picture of what a wife is in relation to her husband. God didn't create her from the man's head so that she would have dominance over him. Nor did He create her from the man's feet so that she would be inferior to him. But she was taken from his side so that she would be right beside him.
We also need to consider that the rib is something that's close to one's heart, just as a husband's heart is to be connected and bound to his wife. It's also a part of the body that is shielded and protected by the arm. And just as a man's strength is represented in his arm, a husband is called to shield and protect his wife.
The rib…it was the perfect part for God to use as He fashioned the woman for the man. It's also a continual reminder of the intimate connection that ought to exist between every wife and husband.
