Concerning the Golden Rule, David Brown writes, "This is the substance of all relative duty; all Scripture in a nutshell." Jesus says that this one rule sums up the Law and the Prophets. In other words, it is a summary of the whole teaching of the Bible. How should we live as Christians? This one rule sums it all up – Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

If our earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to their asking children, how much more will our Heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him. One of the good gifts He has promised to give is the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13). This should be an encouragement to us to pray for revival in our day.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is teaching us how to live in the presence of God in all of life. Prayer is a very important part of the Christian life. Jesus gives us practical instruction on how to persevere in prayer and how to persevere in our lives as Christians. We should always be in prayer about our daily lives and needs. When we pray, we should persevere and not give up. If we do, we will see our prayers answered.

Next Week's Message: An Encouragement to Ask for Revival

Jonathan Edwards wrote concerning the beginning of the revival in Northhampton, Massachusetts in 1734 – "And then it was, in the latter part of December, that the Spirit of God began extraordinarily to set in, and wonderfully to work amongst us; and there were very suddenly, one after another, five or six persons, who were to all appearances savingly converted, and some of them wrought upon in a very remarkable manner." So, the first Great Awakening began in America with only a few people being converted. In the 1740’s it became a great flood as the Holy Spirit was poured out in revival on America. May it happen again in our day.

Next Week's Message: Ask, Seek, Knock

The greatest need of our country today is revival. We must persevere in asking God to send revival on this land. He has done it before and He can do it again, but we must pray. God has sent great revivals to this land in the past. These revivals have come when God's people prayed. Let us persevere today in asking the God who sent the First Great Awakening to America to do it once more.

Next Week's Message: The Church's Greatest Need - Revival

It is easy to find fault in others and yet be blind to our own faults. When we realize that we also will have to stand before the Judgment seat of God and that we are responsible to Him for our thoughts and actions, we will be more careful how we criticize others. Our lives are being lived in the presence of God and what we say and think are important for we are accountable to the One who knows the secrets of our hearts.

Next Week's Message: Persevering in Prayer

John Broadus wrote, "...we ought to trust in the protection and blessing of our Heavenly Father and thus, while not heedless of the future, we may be free from anxiety about it." We are living in the presence of our Heavenly Father and we must learn to trust Him to be with us day by day. We must learn to leave tomorrow in His hands.

Next Week's Message: Beware of Judging Others

David Brown wrote, "The kingdom of God is the primary subject of the Sermon on the Mount – that kingdom which the God of heaven is erecting in this fallen world, within which are all the spiritually recovered and inwardly subject portion of the family of Adam, under Messiah as it divine Head and King." We are called to seek first that Kingdom and its righteousness in our lives and to promote that Kingdom and its righteousness in the world. As we put these things first in our lives, the Lord will bless us and provide all we need.

John Broadus wrote, "Everyone has his ruling passion. That of the Christian must be the love of his Maker and Redeemer." Where is our devotion? To whom do we serve? What is the focus of our life? As a Christian, our devotion should be to the Lord above all. We are His servants and He is our Master.

Next Week's Message: Seeking First the Kingdom of God

We are called to serve only one God and give Him our love and allegiance. D. L. Moody said, "Whatever you love more than God is your idol." We must put the Lord first in our lives. We must serve Him as our Lord and master. Many today bow down to other masters and other Lords. It is the one true God that we must serve.

Next Week's Message: Where Should Our Devotion Be?

A good eye lights up the body and makes the world look clear. A damaged or dark eye darkens the body and makes the world look dark and unclear. David Brown writes, "As a vitiated eye, or an eye that looks not straight and full at its object, sees nothing as it is, so a mind and heart divided between heaven and earth is all dark." If our hearts are divided, our lives will be in confusion.
