The Lord’s Prayer -- Part 5
Saturday, August 30, 2008
“And let us not enter into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” The Lord Jesus knew that we would be facing an enemy in the Christian life. He is the one who seeks to lead us astray and destroy our faith. He also blinds the minds and hearts of unbelievers. Yet, we need not fear for the Lord is greater than the Devil and He will deliver us.

This petition of the Lord’s Prayer has to do with sin. Our sins need to be dealt with. So many don’t know how to deal with their sins. This petition tells us what to do. One of the greatest needs in our nation today is conviction of sin. Without that we cannot see our need for a Savior. Jesus came to save sinners and it is only those who truly face their sins that can be saved.

Give us this day our daily bread. This petition shows us that we are dependent on God for our daily needs. Martin Luther applied this petition to a wide variety of our needs when he wrote, “Daily bread includes everything needed for this life, such as food and clothing, home and property, work and income, a devoted family, an orderly community, good government, favorable weather, peace and health, a good name, and true friends and neighbors.”

The Lord’s Prayer is pretty earthy with petitions like your will be done on earth as it is in heaven and give us this day our daily bread. When Jesus said, your kingdom come, what did He mean? Was He thinking of something far away in the future or was He thinking more of what happens on earth during this age or was He thinking of both? Is the Kingdom of God something we look for only in an age yet to come or will the Kingdom of God have a greater fulfillment in this age? This week’s message explores these important questions.

The Lord Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer as a guide to show us how to pray. It is actually an outline for prayer. It contains many lessons for us to learn. In the first part of the prayer we address God as our Father recognizing that many others do the same. It reminds us to be in prayer for our fellow Christians all over the world. It also teaches us that God’s name is to be reverenced which is something our society needs to learn again. Our forefathers reverenced God’s name. May we learn to do the same today.

Are we truly living in a post-Christian age or are better days for Christianity on the horizon? The parable of the yeast seems to indicate that Christianity is such a powerful force that it will permeate the whole world with its influence. Rather than declining, the Kingdom of God will increase in its influence on the world in the future. This should be our view if we take this parable seriously.

The Kingdom of God starts out as a very small seed and then grows into a tree big enough for the birds to perch in its branches. Jesus teaches that the Kingdom of God will grow and spread. This should be an incentive for us to proclaim the gospel even more that the Kingdom of God may spread in the earth.

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches us to show love to our fellowman no matter who he may be. We are our brother’s keeper. Love is something you do. Opportunities come before us daily to show love to others. How we respond to those opportunities show us where our heart is.

In the parable of the Good Samaritan, a man reaches out with a helping hand to someone in need. Today, we are called to reach out with a helping hand to those in great spiritual need, to the lost of this world. Multitudes cry out for help to deliver them from their lost condition. God calls us to reach out a hand to the needy one.

Of what does a man’s life consist? Jesus said that a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. There is more to life than owning the latest gadgets or automobiles or fine homes. The rich man had an abundance of possessions and wanted even more, but none of that would preserve his life. The life that is truly life can be found only in a right relationship with God.

In the Parable of the Great Banquet, Jesus shows how the gospel is to be presented to all and all are to be invited. For those who refuse the invitation, there will be no salvation, but all who respond and come to the Great Banquet, there will be salvation and blessing.

This parable points out the importance of conviction of sin. The great revivals of the past were marked by conviction of sin. Yet, today we see so little of this. May the Lord visit us once again with the convicting power of the Holy Spirit.
