Overcoming Prayerlessness
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
Pete Briscoe
As Christians, we'd all agree prayer is important. We'd also have to agree that many of us don't take advantage of the wonderful opportunity we have to come before our amazing Father in prayer as often as we could. Why is this?

As we have seen, it is too easy for people to become spiritually sleepy and sloppy. To counteract these tendencies, we are to "encourage" and "build each other up." Here we look at practical ways of doing this.

The teaching the Thessalonians had received concerning "the coming of the Lord" had very practical ramifications. The Church has always needed encouragement to stay alert to them.

The Thessalonians had learned a lot about the future but there was still some confusion about death and what happens after death. So the missionaries gave further instruction so the believers would look ahead with joy.

Encouraging People to Please God
11/12/2009 - Thursday

In the brief period that they had been in Thessalonica the missionaries had been careful to teach the believers "how to live in order to please God." The fact that they also emphasized this in their letter shows that they attached great importance to encouraging this objective.

Encouraging People to Stand Firm

Paul was so concerned about the Thessalonian believers that he sent Timothy to "strengthen and encourage (them) in (their) faith." When he received word that they were indeed "standing firm in the Lord" he was greatly encouraged himself.

Encouraging People to Aim High

The stated objective of Paul and his co-workers for the Thessalonians was to encourage them to aim high, to "live lives worthy of God." We need to know, not only what they meant by this, but also what means they used to attain their objectives.

Paul described his work among the Thessalonians as, "encouraging, comforting, and urging you to live lives worthy of God." But Paul and his colleagues also needed encouragement. In fact, everyone needs encouragement!

Is There Life After Sin?
11/6/2009 - Friday
Jill Briscoe
David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord and turned not aside from anything that He commanded, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite (I Kings 15:5). David broke seven of the ten commandments in one night of sensual indulgence. Sin is coming short of God's standard and has consequences. Is there any sin too big for God to forgive? Can someone who has sinned be restored and renewed? Can God use them again? In other words, is there "life after sin"?

Getting Off the Roof -- Part 2
11/5/2009 - Thursday
Jill Briscoe
David fought and won battles with the Giants of pride, greed, revenge, fear, and despair, and wrote Psalms of praise to his God that are sung in hundreds of languages thousands of years later. David did well for two decades. Then came "middle age." The Giants of Wrath, conferring about which of their number to send out to bring David down, chose one of their most trusted and best. Giant Temptation. "Let's see what you can do," they said as they sent him on his way from the dark places. Giant Temptation settled down to wait for his opportunity. It was not long in coming. And so it was "in the time that kings went forth to war, David stayed at home."

There is a battle going on, Goliath of Gath represents the evil forces opposed to the LORD God Almighty. God calls, equips, and empowers His servants for the good fight of faith for His honor and glory. By the age of 20, David, shepherd boy of Bethlehem, battle ready, had killed his first giant.
