When culture says one thing, but God says another, whose voice do you heed? There's a great temptation to avoid the conflict. But the cross of Christ is inherently in conflict with our culture...especially these days, as much of the media flaunt immoral behavior as normal. Politicians vie for position on issues the Bible settled long ago. Thankfully, the cross can do what politics can't.

The Sea of Galilee was home base for the disciples Jesus first called. No doubt about it, they knew fishing very well. So when their new master told them where to toss their nets, it took unusual grace to do as they were asked. Their obedience was rewarded handsomely when those full nets almost broke. Today we look at a lesson for disciples then and now.

Many people work their entire lives, hoping that someday they'll have a higher calling than the drudgery of a daily job. When Jesus called Simon and Andrew away from their fishing nets, He said they would become fishers of men. For these two, that higher calling meant leaving their boats behind. Do we hear the higher calling of Christ? Are we willing to pay the price to follow it?

Would you leave a lifetime job and head into the financial unknown if a man walked up to you and said, "Come and follow Me?" To those who became His disciples, the call of Jesus was clear and unambiguous. And their response was to immediately leave their nets behind. Are we as quick to heed the call of Christ? If not, perhaps today's broadcast is tailor-made for each of us.

"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," people say. Many of us seek immediate gain rather than long-term benefit. Some of us want our comforts and happiness more than we want to do the will of God. By denying Himself for forty days in the wilderness, Jesus showed us that there's a higher purpose in life than feeling good and getting what we want.

During Hurricane Katrina, many people stole food in their distress. Illegal? Yes. But OK under the circumstances? These situations are tougher in real life than they are in theory.
