"Let everyone come who is thirsty, painfully conscious of (her) need of those things by which the  soul is refreshed and strengthened … whosoever earnestly desires to do it, let (her) come and drink the water of Life without cost."
Revelation 22:17, Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION

"The Guilt Problem: My Guilt Can Be Washed Away When I Come to Jesus"

"Come" - To willingly advance.

"Here in this world He bids us come, there in the next He shall bid us welcome."
John Donne

INSPIRATION

"Either sin is with you, lying on your shoulders, or it is lying on Christ … now if it is lying on your back, you are lost; but if it is resting on Christ, you are free … now choose what you want."
Martin Luther

Several months ago I heard a devotional talk. The gentleman who was speaking related an incident that happened to him. He received a letter at his office with a return address from a local state prison. The individual who wrote the letter asked this question, "Can God save someone who has been as bad as I have been and who has done the things I have done?" The speaker noted that while the man's name seemed familiar, he couldn't remember exactly where he had seen the name before. With the use of his computer, he was able to enter the name and newspaper articles appeared. Horrid articles telling of vicious crimes. The speaker noted that as he read the question in the letter and then thought of the terrible events he was reading about, he had to take a deep breath and realize that Jesus can either save anyone or He can't. There isn't anyone too good that they don't need Jesus or too bad that they can't receive Him.

As we have looked at the problem of sin and guilt in the universe, as we have seen the havoc caused by the burning acid of sin and felt the heartache caused by the heavy burden of guilt, we can rejoice over the fact that there's NO ONE who isn't invited to come when Jesus calls. I love the definition of the word "come." It means to "willingly advance toward the speaker." This means that when Jesus says, "Come," I only have to lift one foot and then the other and advance toward Him and my everlasting home.

Author Macrina Wiederkehr has penned this expressive prayer that is a response to the call to, "Come."

A Prayer for Coming Home

"O True and Ever-Living God
I repent of all my false and empty gods
I look again into the closets of my life
     my mind, my heart
     to see what rules me.
Whom do I serve?
What are the possessions
     the people, the opinions
     the events,
     that control my life?
O Welcoming One
I see you standing at the door
     of my heart
     waiting for me
You gaze at my strange gods
     with an eye of compassion.
I am ashamed to invite you
     into my cluttered house
     yet my heart aches
to be at home with you
My hand is reaching for the door
I hear myself saying, Come on in
I have more room than I thought I had
Come on in, and be the only God in my life.
May this moment of homecoming last forever."

In the last book of the Bible, in Revelation 3:20 (Amplified Bible), the disciple John writes this invitation spoken by our Heavenly Father: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if anyone heeds my voice and opens the door, I will come in." May we listen for the knock, answer the door, and invite the guest to come in - forever."

"Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life!
Such a Way gives us breath,
Such a Truth as ends all strife,
Such a Life as killeth Death."
George Herbert

AFFIRMATION

Driftwood

"Like a piece of driftwood
I have floated along
On the sea of misery
Until landing on this desolate shore
Whereupon I am found
Forgive me, Lord
For I have not recognized
That all the while I was drifting
I could have been dancing upon the sea
Coming under the life-giving
Flow of the blood of Jesus
So that others may find in me
The picture of beauty
That You see"
Jeffrey Tibbetts
