"Jesus Christ is always the same, yesterday, today, yes, and forever to the ages."
Hebrews 13:8, Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION: "CONSISTENT"

Expectation #3- The person will act like they say they will.  The key word is : Consistent.

"Consistent" Cohesiveness among parts.  Agreement.  Compatibility.  Conforming to the same principles or course of action.  The same day in and day out.

What do you think of when you hear the word consistent?

INSPIRATION

"All will be well
All will be well, and all
manner of things will be well."
Julian of Norwich

We called the car "Old Reliable."  It was a 1965 Plymouth Valiant.  An ugly beige color with a dull brown leatherette interior and black rubber floor mats.  The car didn't have air conditioning and sported only an AM radio.  But, and this is a big but - if you were looking for a car with consistency - the same yesterday and today and most likely tomorrow - this rattle-trap piece of steel and aluminum was perfect.  My parents had the car then passed it on to my sister who drove it to pieces and then it became my car when I needed a vehicle during my nursing classes in Los Angeles.  I not only drove the car mile after mile all over the city but I also wrecked the poor little thing.  However, after a few weeks at the body shop, "Old Reliable" was like new (I'm not certain anyone had ever seen the car new).

After we'd worn the tread off more tires than I can count, the Plymouth moved to another family and last I heard the car was still running.  Talk about consistent.  I never ever remember the car not starting or breaking down.  This automobile most likely ran the same way on the day it came off the assembly line as it runs today.

There's something comforting about finding something or better yet, someone who is consistent.  Whether it's a car or a person, it's nice to know you don't have to worry if something or someone will work.  Especially with the people in our lives.  Isn't it difficult if a person you work with or live with is totally unpredictable - all of the time? It's nice to have some spontaneous behavior in our lives but dealing with individuals in situations where they are up one day and down the next, kind one second and mean the next, loving one day and hateful the next - makes life a trial.  This is why I love the words in Hebrews where Paul gives us the assurance that Jesus doesn't run hot and cold on us.  He doesn't hear us one day and ignore us the next.  He is the same yesterday as today.  And He'll be the same tomorrow.

Tucked into the Old Testament is a short book called Jonah - a story you might recall, about a man and a big fish. But the story of Jonah contains more than a "fish tale."  You may remember, God asked Jonah to go to Ninevah to call the people of this wicked city to repentance.  After a brief detour in the belly of a fish, Jonah did as God asked and went to Ninevah.  Guess what?  The people repented.  God was thrilled.  Jonah was furious.  In Jonah 4:1, the Bible records, "But it displeased Jonah exceedingly and he was very angry."  Can you imagine a person being unhappy that wicked people changed course in their lives?  I can't.  But Jonah was mad.  I guess he wanted to see God use His power to destroy rather than restore.  Yet I ask you, isn't it consistent with God to bring restoration to the lives of His wayward children?  This is why God so generously sent His Son to earth.  It was a mission of unity.  A mission of healing.  A mission of love.  It was a real-life example to you and me of what is natural about the character of God.  He is love the Bible tells us in John 3: 16.

Grumpy Jonah shouldn't have been unhappy God saved the wicked people of Ninevah.  It was consistent with God's character.  For He consistently loves us, yesterday, today and tomorrow.  I'm so thankful I can count on His love - every minute of everyday my entire life.  Aren't you, too?

"In the nighttime of our fears, and in our time of questioning, be present, ever present God…be present until the desert places blossom like a rose and hope is born again."

AFFIRMATION

God's Constant

"God's constant:
this promise of|
His love that never ends or fails.
As light spun out of darkness
so came Love,
complete, entire, encircling
time and earth
that each of us might see the way
to enter Him,
and come at last
alive.
1 Corinthians 13
