EXPLORATION:

"Invincible" - incapable of being conquered, over-run, or subjugated.

Is there an area of my life where I feel invincible?

What is that area?

Why do I feel this way?

Is there an area of my life where I do not feel invincible?

What area is it?

Why do I feel this way?

INSPIRATION:

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
Philippians 4: 13, King James Version

It was a perfect day. I was nineteen-years-old, strong and healthy, standing atop a mountain ready to take off down the hill skiing my way into happiness.

As I shoved off, the words of Helen Reddy's popular female mantra rang in my head, "I am woman…I am strong…I am invincible."

That was me. Tough. Strong. Independent. I didn't need anyone.  I could do it all on my own!

Do you ever remember a day in your life when you felt the way I just described? You were on-top-of-the-world.  Not a care in sight! No bill collectors on the phone. No kids fighting in the other room. No one telling you their supper was lousy. No doctor delivering the news you have breast cancer.

I'm certain we can all remember one time in our lives when things seemed to be going quite well. When taking care of yourself wasn't something you put on a back burner.

And yes, maybe, just for a split second the thought went fleetingly through your head - "I'm invincible."  Don't feel bad.  We have all had moments when we thought we could handle what life was dishing out - and then one day, without warning, an event hit.  It might have been your husband saying he's leaving. Or the principal called saying you were needed at the school - right now.  You heard the words "drugs found in a locker" and your heart sank.  Or a routine medical exam brought the awful news - a word you never wanted to hear - cancer.

Whatever the tidal wave, you now find yourself knocked off your feet - flattened and unable to arise.

If you, like myself, have ever found yourself facing events that are so profound you can't handle them on your own, then our studies for the next few days are for you because we will take a look at what being "invincible" really means. And we're going to get the help we need from the "who"…the "Him"…the "Man" who gives us what we need to become invincible.

We are going to look at the quality of invincibility by looking at the Biblical lives of two Old Testament women with "invincible" courage - Deborah and Ruth.  And we will explore two key elements found in their lives that helped them develop into invincible women. And, we are going to take a look at how happiness in the midst of hardship can still grow and thrive.  Plus we will focus on what God provides and gives to you and me so we will have "invincible" strength.  One lesson will come from Moses on a mountain in the Old Testament. And the other lesson will come from Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Whatever the past has delivered, the future God has planned for you has been constructed by His healing, His wholeness, and His invincible power, I promise you!

"God will enter into your night,
as the ray of the sun enters
into the dark, hard earth,
driving right down
to the roots of the tree,
and there, unseen, unknown,
unfelt in the darkness,
filling the tree with life,
a sap of fire
will suddenly break out,
high above that darkness,
into living leaf and flame."
Caryll Houselander

AFFIRMATION:

"So we're not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without His unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times…There's far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone now tomorrow. But the things we can't see now will last forever."
2 Corinthians 4: 16-18, The Message
