"And when Saul sent messengers to take David, (Michal) said, ‘He is sick.' Then Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, ‘Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.' And when the messengers came in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats' hair at its head."
I Samuel 19: 14-16, Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION

"The Essence of Boldness"

Essence - "That which makes something what it is; intrinsic, fundamental nature or the most important quality of something, essential."

When I have needed to be bold, what do I believe has been the "essence" or "essential" element that caused me to behave in a strengthened manner?

INSPIRATION

"There is often in people to whom "the worst" has happened an almost transcendent freedom, for they have faced "the worst" and survived it."
Carol Pearson

A few weeks ago, Jim and I watched a television documentary entitled Brace For Impact about the emergency landing of US Airways flight 1549 in the Hudson River.

What I found so interesting were the interviews with regular folk, just like you and me, who not only endured this horrific event, but came away from it with a very interesting outlook on their lives.  Many noted that what they counted as essential in their lives changed drastically when they were confronted with the reality that death was imminent.  When they finally were rescued, and could take a breath again, those interviewed reflected about the fact that many things in their lives would never be the same.

This program touched a very sensitive place in Jim's life and mine for after our car accident, every police officer at the scene, every firefighter and paramedic and every physician who cared for us said the same thing, "There's no explainable reason the two of you survived this crash."

When you hear words like this over and over, it makes you think long and hard about the purpose of your life.  But what's more, it challenges you to identify the real essentials or the essence of your existence.  What and "Who" is at the core of my life everyday?  When you do survive a situation, that to human vision appears unsurvivable, I know I looked for a hand I believed had me in its palm and it was the hand of my heavenly Father, whose protective love and sustaining strength had been the essence of my existence even before the accident that nearly killed us.

Every once in a while in the Bible, we find a story like Michal's, where one of God's children, in this case His daughter, was challenged by the terror of death.

Don't think for a minute that Michal felt safe in her father's house. She didn't!  If she'd felt all was well, she would never have insisted her husband David, whom she loved, escape and leave her presence. Michal understood all too well the evil in her father's heart and the lengths he would go to in order to get the desired results.  As our text tells us, when Michal told her father's messengers that David was ill, this information didn't sit well with Saul.  He ordered his helpers to bring David to him, bed and all!   Saul would kill David even while he was in his own bed!

This is where the drama really kicked in for the messengers found out that the man in the bed was no man at all.  Think how these messengers of Saul would have felt conveying the bad news to the crazy king.  I wouldn't have wanted to be in their shoes.

However, it is the heroic Michal who stood strong and saved David's life. She comes out looking as though she were filled with the essence of boldness.  This young woman carried within her this essential quality.

To find out more about this essential quality, I went to Strong's Concordance and checked out the words bold, boldly, and boldness.  I wanted to see where and how these words were used in the Bible.  In I Thessalonians 2: 2 (Amplified Bible), there is a wonderful text which for me reflects the "essence of boldness" for this passage contains the essential quality and function of someone who is bold.  Here are the words as penned by the Apostle Paul, "But though we had already suffered and been outrageously treated at Philippi, as you know, yet in the strength of our God we summoned courage to proclaim to you boldly (unfalteringly) the Good News of the Gospel."  In spite of the strife, in the face of severe persecution, with troubles crashing down upon them, Paul told his friends that the boldness they showed found its essence, its core, and its essential quality in the strength of God.

With so many perplexing problems falling in your lap and mine everyday, doesn't it appear that our first requirement and our essential action should be to make certain the strength of our God is what we count on to give us boldness in times of trouble.

I just wonder if the Psalmist David, ever shared these words with his wife Michal, "As for God, His way is perfect! The word of the Lord is tested and tried!  He is a shield to all those who take refuge and put their trust in Him. For who is God except the Lord? Or who is the Rock save our God. The God who girds me with strength and makes my way perfect?  He makes my feet like hinds' feet, able to stand firmly or make progress on the dangerous heights of testing and trouble; He sets me securely upon my high places" (Psalm 18: 30-33, Amplified Bible).

And this my dear friend, is our Father's essence of boldness, portrayed in the lives of each of His children.

AFFIRMATIONS

"Prayer For Protection"

"Lord, guard us, Your children, wherever we wander,Release us from pressures we cannot withstand,
Lift us high when we falter or founder.
Place our feet on rocks and not on sand.
Give us Your hand as we walk through the darkness,
Strengthen our souls with bright hope from above,
Keep joy in our hearts against all the world's starkness,
And fill all our emptiness with Your love.  Amen."
