Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
Honouring your mother is one of God’s top ten expectations for your life!
That’s right, this biblical command is number 5 of the Ten Commandments God gave to Moses, expressing the big moral expectations He has for human life. Honouring your parents is really important to God.
This doesn’t mean you have to pretend that they are right about everything. Nor does it mean that you never confront them about issues in their lives. Neither does it mean that even as you grow older you must do everything they want you to do. But what it does mean is that you are always respectful toward them. Your parents may have been loving and kind, or they may have been cruel and difficult to live with. Your emotions will try to dominate you and make you respond to your parents on the basis of how they have treated you in the past. But you cannot control anyone else’s heart. What you can do is respond rightly yourself.
God is challenging you today to look for ways to encourage, respect and honour your mother. When you do this, you please God and open up channels of communication with your mother.
