Ignite! | Proverbs 3:5-6 | Devotional

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Okay, how many of you memorized this verse as a kid? I see those hands. KJV? Yeah, me too. If this passage were a movie, it would be in the classic section. If it were a car, it would be a 1979 El Camino Super Sport. If it were a house, it would be an historical landmark. And like many classics we never watch, classic cars we never drive, and historical landmarks we never take the time to explore, this verse is so familiar we seldom stop and ponder its truths. But this morning get in and slide behind the wheel. Let’s take time to take this classic for a drive.

Wholehearted trust. That's where it starts. Trusting that God knows best in all situations. Trusting that He will lead in the right direction. Trusting He will give me everything I need to do what He wants me to do. Trust does not mean I disengage my brain. Leaning “not on my own understanding” doesn’t mean my sense of reasoning is thrown out the window. But there are times when we just can’t figure it out. Times when things don’t make sense. Times when the directional signs are not well marked. That’s when wholehearted trust must kick in.

Don’t get me wrong. Even when I can reason something out, wholehearted trust is not jettisoned. It gives me the confidence to move forward. Even when things do make sense, wholehearted trust is imperative. It keeps me from self-centered decisions. Even when the directional signs are well marked, I still must turn left or right or keep going straight with wholehearted trust. Even on the right roads there are potholes. That’s what the next verse speaks to.

When I acknowledge God in everything, when I am wholeheartedly following Him, He will remove the obstacles so I can follow the straight paths that lead to His intended destination. And when I arrive, there is a true sense of satisfaction knowing that we have taken a journey with God. There is a renewed sense of trust.

Trusting God ignites my heart with a burning passion to follow hard after Him. Trusting in myself leaves my heart cold and self-centered. Hmm…trusting in God or trusting in myself? Not much of an option, is it?

But, Lord, it is so very hard to do. Help us to trust You more. Help us to rely on your direction instead of setting out on our own. Knowing that trusting in You is the only choice that makes sense, help us to do. At the next road sign, we seek Your direction.
