The Servant's Heart

There is something wonderful happening in the pediatric oncology unit at UCLA hospital (known as three-east). Watch your step! Even late at night a child may zoom by on a Big Wheel. The nurses work hard each day to make the hospital a warm and child-friendly environment. Why? Because nurses serve the emotional needs of children as well as their medicine. These nurses rarely see healthy kids. As soon as children are well, they go home and others do not survive. Often I think about thee-east nurses and wonder ‘How do they do it?' Day after day hurting children cry for relief from nurses who selflessly serve.
The three-east pediatric oncology nurses do not seek glory but serve out of love. What an example these nurse are! When we give it should be done with a pure heart. It is easy to serve when there is personal benefit, but Jesus wants heavenly motives. Loving sacrifice has no ulterior agenda.
Approach today with the heart of a servant - like Jesus. Do not seek praise or reward as you help. Be quiet about the good you do. It may be difficult, but the long term payback is worth it. A greater personal satisfaction will surface when your motives are pure. God honors a pure heart.
