THE NEED FOR SERVICE

God has given you certain kinds of gifts and abilities for a purpose. Have you ever thought why He created you so uniquely? Consider what makes you distinctive, in what areas you are gifted and why you were given these talents.  They are not just so you can make more money. They are not just so you can have more fun. God gives you these talents, gifts and abilities so that you can use them to serve other people.

If you are spending all your time working a job, caring for your family, recreating for yourself and you do not have any time left over to invest, then you have to rearrange your schedule so that there is time to invest in service. If you get to the end of the month and there is no money left over to invest, you have to recalculate your budget. Continuing to live without investing any of your money is foolish. You need to make changes in order to have a safe and secure financial future. Similarly, if you want to have a safe and secure eternal future, then you are going to have to find a way to carve out time to serve other people because that is what God placed you on earth to do.

God did not put you here so you could only serve your own self-interests. God did not give you marvelous skills, gifts and abilities so that you could use them only in the capacity that you want. God gave them to you so that you would use them to serve others. I believe we are most fully alive when we are doing just that. You are tapping in the most significant way to the way God created you when you use those talents that God has given you to bless and to serve other people.

Some may not believe there is a need for service. And if you are not looking beyond your immediate life, you really may not see that there is so much to be done and every person is needed to get the job done. At the same time not every person is needed to do the same job. Everyone has different gifts. Everyone has different abilities. We are not all supposed to be contributing in the same way. But there are many different jobs that need to be done. One reason why God gave us the Church was so we could have an organization in which service could be done. Jesus said, “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). When we do good works, which is when we serve others, we end up glorifying God.
