The Acceptable Discrimination
The Christmas season is arguably the most important time of the year for Christians around the world. It is a happy season where Christians celebrate their favorite scriptures, songs and traditions. It is a time when Christian values of love, giving and goodwill are trumpeted by almost everyone. But this is not the reality for all Christians.
When it comes to discrimination there is overwhelming support against it. We do not tolerate discrimination against blacks, gays, women, the elderly or the disabled. It is a badge of pride for Americans. But there is one form of discrimination that is acceptable - Christian persecution. What we would never allow to happen to any other group we ignore if it is against Christians.
According to a report released in March by Gordon-Conwell Seminary one in four of the world’s Christians live in countries hostile to their faith. At any given moment there are 100 to 200 million Christians around the world being persecuted for their faith. The Center for the study of Global Christianity reports that 100,000 Christians die every year (11 every hour) because of their faith. 2013 marked the largest displacement of religious communities in recent memory many of who belonged to Christianity and presently Christians in more than 60 countries face persecution from their governments for their beliefs according to the US State Department.It is the biggest human rights issue in the world but the least reported on, talked about or protested against.
These millions of discriminated Christians face similar realities. For men this discrimination means living with violence and intimidation. Their houses and businesses are raided. They are often arrested and held without charge. For women this discrimination means experiencing vulnerability, being beaten and raped. They are left without a place to live, with no income to provide for their children. For children this discrimination means a life of uncertainty. Some are orphaned, many are denied education, socially excluded they are doomed to menial jobs. Please be praying for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering persecution for the cause of Christ.
