On Fire for God

God is beginning a renewal in the church I pastor. I am seeing a move of God that is special and unique. This renewal will continue as we “eagerly follow the Holy Spirit” (Romans 12:11). I think this eagerness is pictured best by fire. God revealed himself several times in the Bible through fire. Twice with Moses, including the burning bush, God used fire as a symbol for his presence.

If we are truly on fire for God great things will happen in all areas of our lives, church and community. The Jesus Culture chorus sums it up well, “Set a fire in my soul that I can’t contain, that I can’t control, I want more of you God.” If we want more of God we will allow God to start a fire in us, then renewal will take place in a powerful way. The symbol or picture of fire has several meanings we need to understand and appropriate in our lives.

Fire Creates Refining

Fire purifies or refines whatever it touches. We need the fire of God to cleanse away anything in our lives that is keeping us from being totally committed to Him. We all have our pet sins and they need to be removed in us. God’s fire purifies as it burns away everything that is not pleasing to God. Let the fire of God burn so hot in you that it makes you like gold (Revelation 3:18) that has been put in the fire to remove all impurities so you shine beautifully pleasing to God.

Fire Brings Illumination

Fire brings light into darkness. When the fire of God is burning in us it will shine so brightly everyone will see it. Jesus taught us, “No one would light a lamp and put it under a clay pot. A lamp is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house” (Matthew 5:15). When God’s fire is burning in us we will want to share about His love and forgiveness. Evangelistic intensity will be in us and in our church. This renewal will then lead to all out revival.

Fire Indicates Enthusiasm

We all know what it means to be fired up. When we are enthusiastic, when we have zeal, we have the fire. The fire of God in us means we want more of God, we desire what He wants, we have passion like never before. Zeal for the things of God will amplify a renewal like nothing else can. If you want to see God move in a new and more powerful way it is because you are on fire for God. Let God fan the flame in you, let it spread to others and let’s see what God can do.
