God’s Love

If we can lose our relationship with God, then His love toward us is conditional, and we must keep on performing in order to maintain this relationship. Our performance toward God could be motivated out of fear that we might lose His acceptance. But if our relationship is secure – if God guarantees He won’t reject us no matter what – then we can be confident that God loves us unconditionally. We are motivated to do good out of appreciation and gratitude for what He has done for us. But how can we know that our relationship is secure?

Is it possible for me to know now if I am going to heaven when I die?

Read I John 5:13 and Romans 8:35-39. What promises are given?

If I have committed certain sins will I be disqualified from receiving eternal life?

Read Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28. Are certain sins more unforgivable than others?

Read Colossians 2:13. How many of our sins are forgiven?

Read Hebrews 10:17 and Psalm 103:12. When God forgives us does He forget or does He hold our sins against us?

What if I enter into a relationship with God but I don’t feel any different?

Feelings may or may not accompany this decision. Your relationship with God is based on what God does, and not on how you feel. The way we feel does not change what God has done if we have truly received Christ by faith. We must learn not to rely on our emotions, but rather to rely on God and to remember His promises.

Read Isaiah 26:3-4. When we are tempted to doubt the security of this relationship with God, what encouragement does this verse offer?

How does the idea of being unconditionally loved and accepted by God – with no possibility of losing that love make you feel?
