Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30 NIV
In 1978, Chaka Khan had a hit song called “I’m Every Woman.” You may have heard it? Maybe, the first line of the chorus will spark your memory, “I’m every woman, it’s all in me.” When I hear these words, I’m thinking —and that’s where she went wrong.
It’s absolutely too much pressure to be “every” woman and to have it “all” in you. And, what does that really look like anyways? The neck of Tyra Banks, the smile of Kerry Washington, the appeal of Julia Roberts, the strength of Michelle Obama and the work ethic of Katie Couric.
I’m tired just thinking about it, but haven’t many us sneakily or blatantly attempted to be EVERY WOMAN? You might be on a treadmill right now, reading this devotion or a magazine, while contemplating what really happened at work today. Okay, so I’m wrong, but don’t some of us think we have the knack to be more than what’s humanly possible at times?
There’s no denying it, women are the masters at multitasking. Unfortunately, after all the multitasking is done, many of us are left pooped and quite agitated, wondering where did the time go and what happened to my hair? And, women like Wonder Woman with her inability to lose a battle and the Proverbs 31 woman with her impeccable list of attributes don’t help us much or MAYBE they do?
Wonder Woman was considered one of the greatest superheroes ever. Her red boots and those bulletproof bracelets made her a heroic staple. Besides her killer outfit, what can we learn from her? Maybe this: stick to one heroic task at a time. It’s nice to “think” we can be EVERY WOMAN, and do it all, but it’s not realistic and it’s so unfair to our overall wellbeing. If Wonder Woman tackled one villain per episode, I’m thinking we can pace ourselves a little too.
What about that put together lady in Proverbs 31? What can we learn from her? It’s easy. The attributes in Proverbs 31:10-31 is meant to be a guide, not a commandment. If you go to verse 31:30, you will see the key attribute to emulate is FEAR OF THE LORD. When you and I have a healthy sense of fear of the Lord that will guide us to becoming the beautiful and unique women we were created to be, and not EVERY woman. She doesn’t exist.
Seek God for wisdom and to help you discern what the priority is from the busy work.
Lord, I thank You for being real and for creating me uniquely and wonderfully. I know that You know me better than I know myself. Help me to know Your ways for me Isaiah 55:8 and give me the courage to see it through. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
