August 5
MORNING

Walk in newness of life.

Just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.—I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.—Neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them.—Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. . . . But that is not the way you learned Christ!—assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus. . . . Put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

EVENING

“Your will be done.”

I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.—“Not as I will, but as you will.”—But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

We do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

“You do not know what you are asking.”—He gave them what they asked, but sent a wasting disease among them.—Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.

I want you to be free from anxieties.—You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
